Re: printing. Look in the Tandy Specific Data Base for a program named PRTFIX
and that should cure all your ills with that. This is a short TSR which
corrects the error in Tandy's BIOS code and makes the printer status bit behave
like on an IBM PC or compatible.

Let me know if you cannot find it -- in the interim, you can install the printer
driver to print to disk using the Print Setup Routines in WP5.0 -- simply select
a disk file name in place of LPT1 and then it will print to disk. Then, copy
the file to LPT1. Klutzy, but it works.

I think the price is OK but let me put it this way -- I bought a 1000HD with
640KB of RAM, a smartwatch, CM-11 color monitor, two joysticks, DOS 3.2, and
BASIC, and Lotus 1-2-3 for $900 used. Before I spend that much again (ala what

     From: HEST To: JOANNA

Joan --

You are talking to a die-hard Tandy 1000 fan here. I bought mine new about 4
years ago -- or maybe 3 years ago. I paid about $1000 for it, plus $150 for a
DMP-105, and the monitor (a Tandy RGB CM-4) was tossed in. Since that time I
have: Upgraded to a DMP 130-A printer, added (and subesequently upgraded) a
modem, added full memory to bring it up to 640 K, Added a 232-port on a
piggy-back board, and then hooked up a mouse. I have one joystick which I hardly
ever use. I also bought a second 5-1/4" drive. It is not a speedy roadster of a
machine, but I absolutely love it. I have never had any compatibility problems
with respect to software. The only regret I have at this point is that you
cannot get a 386 motherboard to fit this box, if you are of a mind to upgrade
but don't want to spend beeg deenero. I think I read somewhere (maybe here) that
a 386-motherboard upgrade would become available, but probably at Tandy prices.
I am just waiting it out...

Wasn't the 2000 more of an AT clone?

     HARDCARD COMPATIBILITY
     From: TOMLAW To: ALL

I have a chance to purchase a used 20 Meg hard card from a reputable computer
consultant for a rock bottom price ($100), but I have some questions regarding
compatibility with my vintage model Tandy 1000 (Ser. No. <100,000). If anyone
can help it will be appreciated.

The hardcard was manufactured by PC's Limited (now Dell Computers) in 1986. It
contains a Tandon TM-362 Drive and a Western Digital WD1002-WX1 Controller.
PC's Ltd. info. says the controller is functionally equivalent to a WD1002S-WX2.

My questions are:

    1. Can this controller be made to work in a Tandy 1000? From
Joe Pierce's Nov. '87 PCM article (p79) on T1000 hard drives
it appears that it won't work, as is, since it was made for
an IBM-PC. However, can the controller's BIOS chip or some
other component be changed out to make it compatible?

    2. PC's Ltd. supplied Utilities (SDBOOT and HDBOOT) to allow
booting the drive on original version IBM-PC's (the one's
with 64K motherboards and BIOS's that didn't support hard
drives). Will these work on my Tandy 1000 without changing
out the BIOS chip from Ver. 01.00.00 to Ver. 01.01.00?

    3. Is the T1000 power supply powerful enough to handle the
load of an extra drive? If not, can the T1000's power supply
be changed out like an IBM-PC's can? About how much $?

    4. What about power plugs? I have two floppy drives
installed and there are no extra plugs for a third drive. I
want to maintain two floppies as I plan to replace one of the
    5 1/4" drives with a 3 1/2" drive in the future. Is there a
way to physically connect a third drive to the T1000's power
    supply?

    5. Finally, what about MS-DOS? Can I access a hard drive
with 2.11 or is it necessary to upgrade to 3.x? PC's Ltd.
info. states that 3.2 is REQUIRED to use a 20 Meg drive.
However, is it possible to partition the drive as two 10 Meg
    drives and use 2.11?

Any assistance you can give on any of the above ?s will be greatly appreciated.
Hate to pass up a good deal like this! Besides, only #1 is specific to this hard
card. The others must be faced even if I bought a new drive made for the Tandy
1000. Comments and suggestions PLEASE.

Thanks.

The first and most important thing to think about is the BIOS upgrade. This is
best handled by a R.S. repair center, as it involves cutting traces and
soldering.

The hard drive interrupt used on the T1000 and T1000A is #3, where it is #5 on
an IBM machine. This will have to be configured on the hard card- ala cutting
traces and soldering jumpers.

Mine boots up with a pink border and a light cyan screen. The text types dark
grey. It makes my monitor look like it ought to be sitting on the vanity table!
I know the color coding on the 3000 is different than that for the 1000 -- or so
I surmise based on Bill Barden's nifty book on Basic Graphics & Sound for the
T1000. Have you seen that book? I'm trying to write a little color and shape

covers a ton of ground and when I get a notion as to what little tricks I want

that book. Right now I am working on the "payoff module" -- I.E., what happens

shapes displayed on screen break into little grins and chuckle. -- HEST

MISAL: I think often about the resistence of some of the "artsy

"The Gods Must Be Crazy" or any scenario wherein a group
of people living a certain way are at first intimidated
and then mystified by the gadgets and ways of another group.
This particular group {the "artsy" set} is pretty verbal

Tell your friend to use the DRIVER.SYS command to tell the system that there is
another drive (the external). This must be placed in the CONFIG.SYS file. Look
like this:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:2        (the "2" assigns drive C:, a "1" would be drive
                               B:, a "0" would be drive A:)

All of this hinges on whether the floppie controller will handle the third
drive. If it won't, then your friend is stuck with his present situation.

If you could call it from Basic, you would have to know what parameters that

Del Turner's Word.bas which appeared in May, 1988 issue. Can't seem to find it
under a variety of keywords. Where ist it - can I download it?? - Thanks,

     1.44meg drive
     From: MROGERS To: ALL

I've recently attempted to add a 1.44 meg disk drive to a 1000 TX. I have MS-DOS
3.3 (which is sold for the 3000) and have set switch S3 off to access the
external floppy drive controller. The documentation which accompanied the floppy
controller board was most enigmatic. There are at least 13 jumpers on the board
and while the documentation is clear on some, it is cryptic with others. Has
anyone out there been successful in upgrading the internal 720k floppy with a
1.44Meg one? I need to have the 1.44Meg drive configured for A:. but it uses an
LCS-6610F which is supposed to imitate the IBM Disk adapter. Any help will be
appreciated.

You must be one of the guys who answered the PCM survey!!! I have the Lien book
also ("Learning Basic for the Tandy 1000/2000" and I agree that it is a tad on
the user-friendly side but I still find it valuable. Virtually everything I've
learned about DOS and BASIC I've learned in one of three places: 1) Magazines --
PCM chief among them; 2) the Lien book and the Barden book I mentioned before
("Graphics and Sound for the Tandy 1000s and PC Compatibles") (RS Cat. No.
25-1512) and 3) HERE. MISAL directed me to a file in the DL full of programming
notes and tips -- it's kind of humongous and takes a while to download, but I
used my archive program to list its contents to a diskfile and now I can just
use the DOS FIND command on that file to see if I have anything in there
remotely relevant to a problem before I go to the trouble of de-archiving the
article in question. I can't seem to put my hands on the slip of paper with the
file name or the DL, but Mike will remember, I'm sure. It's a text file archive.
As I say, a batch of articles -- I think it might be called PROGTIPS.ARC or
something like that. Actually, he told me about it in a message here on this
Forum so maybe if you search for notes or threads between me and MISAL (MISAL
and >I<) you'll come across that exchange. The file also has sample programs in
it, so you can study the usage of various commands in context. I find this
helpful.

Best ofluck! Tell me what you are interested in doing with BASIC.

Since April ( I believe ), a new format has been incorporated when it pertains
to PCM programs, Chris. All of the programs in the a monthly issue are now
archived into one envelope. This means that you must download every program and
pay a fee of $12. Prior to this, a single program cost $5.

Look in the database listing for MAY88. This archive will contain the program
you seek.

     KLOK2K Version 4.1
     From: DOUGFOGG To: MISAL

KLOK2K.COM has been revised again. I just uploaded Version 4.1 to the Tandy
Specific database, replacing 4.0. It's still a 24-hour time display with
integral screen blanker, but now you can pick your own "hot keys" for the time
display and blanker toggles. Blanking interval is adjustable, as before, from 1
to 1638 seconds. Just put desired blanking interval in seconds on the command
line, followed optionally by the hex ASCII codes of the desired hot keys. For
example, "KLOK2K 60 B6 B7" sets the blanking interval to 60 seconds, the time
display toggle to ALT-F11, and the blanker toggle to ALT-F12. Just typing
"KLOK2K" alone during the initial load is equivalent to "KLOK2K 300 25 30",
giving the default 300 second blanking interval, a time display toggle of ALT-K,
and a blanker toggle of ALT-B. You can set these parameters during your initial
load of KLOK2K or anytime thereafter.
This should let you set up KLOK2K so its hot keys won't conflict with any
other software without resorting to patching. The Version 4.1 KLOK2K.COM file
is about twice as big as 4.0 (5801 bytes), but memory use is still only 1664
bytes. Complete instructions are on its sign-on screen.

Hi JJ -- Ask Mike. I would suspect the answer to your question is NTFL as we say
up here in V'mont {"Not Too Freakin' Loikley"} as I would imagine a Cobol Acct
Pkg would be written in Cobol & I gather many/most other big application
packages are written in C. Though if you mean by "tying together" writing a menu
or something like that so you could call up your choice I would think of course
you could write a menu in Basic. But as for integrating the big apps, ask Mike.
I bet he says Nope. I enjoy goofing around in Basic because it's intuitively
accessible -- it uses a lot of English. I've had fun with it because iwhen I get
an idea for a program I can write the code pretty readily -- it's not a
>>>FRUSTRATING<<< experience. I'd like to develop comparable facility in another
programming language, like C or Pascal. Reme,mber, I'm a "poet", not a
"sliderule" -- I'm not so much interested in the fine points of a language as I
am in what I can do with it. Which, I suppose, is like most people!! I also
would like to break into the market for freelance doc, support and PR markets in
this industry. I do a lot of writing to feed my face -- mostly sports these
days, and classical music, and "human interest" stuff -- both for print and for
audio/broadcast (I operate a little one-person program production house, making
radio series for syndication). I've made some useful and enthusiastic contacts
who would like to "get me in the door" but they all say I would do better -- and
get better assignments -- if I were to get a grasp of C or Pascal (and ideally
Xenix, to boot). Well, gotta go.. The Red Sox just >>>BURIED<<< the tigers,
2,437 to 3, and I need to pop open a celebratory Bud with my Dad... ! See ya! --

The 1000TX being 4/8 Mhz could be the problem. Your factory setting is for a 10

     RE: 1000TX LCS-6610F (Re: Msg 12992)

There is the possibility that BIOS is overriding the setting of JP4. Although,
this is supposed to allow the controller to let the system know that a 1.44 (or
720K) is present. You might try setting JP4 open and using your CONFIG.SYS file.
The following is the syntax to allow a 1.44 meg drive:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:0 /F:7      (A: drive as 1.44)
DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:1 /F:7      (B: drive as 1.44)

Make sure that DRIVER.SYS is present and in the path, at boot. Also, this
will only work with DOS 3.2 and above.

The Tandy 1000 and 1000A have a strange difference in interrupt lines, from the
IBM standard. Interrupts 2 is used as the hard disk controller, by Tandy, where
IBM uses interrupt 5. Now other signal travel along these bus lines, and it
could be that your CAD program is looking in the wrong place to interface to the
8087.

Tandy's description of interrupt 5, is the Vertical Sync function - but this
only occurs about every 10 cycles, on the bus. Ask your Tandy repair center
about the possibility of this beingthe problem.

One other thing - if you do not have a DMA chip installed in your 1000A, there
are many I/O bus signal that will not function (i.e. DRQ1, DACK1, DRQ3, DACK3).

Drop the interrupt question in your repair centers lap - let me know what they
tell you.

recoqnizing the presence of the 8087 or does it crash. There is a jumper that

Larry, I appreciate your reply. I did pull the jumper on the motherboard, my
system would not even boot if I didn't do that. I've replaced the 8087 once
already. The program crashes and requires that I do a cold reboot, ctrl/alt/del
will not work. As this is the second CAD program that I've tried with identical
failure (CCS Designer was #1, designCad was #2) I suspect that it is a hardware
failure. I have the 1000A with 640k and the DMA chip on the memory board. Both
CAD programs work well in the non-8087 mode. I don't have anything else that
uses that chip. More specifically the programs never completely load, the "A"
drive is being accessed and the system locks up with the drive light still on.
I've waited as long as 5 minutes before rebooting and the drive light continues
tostay accessed. I was suspicious that it might be the NEC V-20 chip so I
replaced it with the standard 8088. The failure mode is identical with either
chip. I do not have a hard drive on this machine, just two 360k floppies and a
modem (internal) and the new SmartWatch from Tandy. Ihave also tried DOS
versions 2.1 and 3.2 both fail in the same way. I really appreciate your
assistance with this problem....any other info you need?

DataDesk Turbo 101 Keyboard for the T1k
     From: CAMPER To: ALL

I have the DataDesk Turbo 101 keyboard on my T1k-TX and do like it alot. My
first impressions of this keyboard, featured in an ad in a past issue of PCM,
was bad. The keypad only gave numbers, scan codes were not what were promised,
etc. That soon changed after I called Datadesk and complained. The tech said
they had a new chip for the keyboard that would correct these problems and he'd
send one. 2 days later I had the chip in service, after taking the keyboard
apart and replacing the 40pin 8749. Viola! The num keypad worked, and every scan
code was as required. I now hav Keycnvt.sys in the background to change the
tandy scan codes to ibm's, and things such as Superkey work fine.
In short, this keyboard is great. If anyone gets one and have the keypad
problem, call datadesk cust service and it should be corrected easily. Retail,
this is 179.95, but from distributors it can be had as low as $134.95. A coupon
comes for one of three software packages: Sidekick or Lightning by Borland, or
Thinktank.

rediscoverd the wheel - it seems all the distributers for this package make a
nice bit of money on the side by doing dbase programs to make up for the lack of
flexibility in the COBOL code. Howsomever, I've already made considerabe

You cannot send and receive simultaneosuly using Basic - it simply is not fast

I would suggest Peter Norton's Assembly Language Book for the IBM PC. This is a
Brady book published by Prentice Hall Press. You should be able to find it in
any bookstore that carries computer publications.

Also, take a look at A86/D86 assembler/debugger in the Programming Topic. It was
written by Eric Issacson and is an extremely fine compiler. It has many source
code examples to help you.

Yes Paul, the chips will work just fine in your 1000 SX, if they are 41256,
minimum 150 ns. The better 120 ns chips (more expensive) are optimum but the 150
ns will work just fine ( ns = nanoseconds ).

If you are talking $20 Canadian, then that is decent price, if not, try Leo

If you sent your DOS registration card in to Tandy, you should have been
notified of all upgrades. Usually, (depending on the store) if you take your old
original DOS diskette in, they will give you a present!

If the clock board is IBM compatible, it should not damage your computer. In
fact, there are many "third party" boards, in use, in EX's.

     Omniterm, KLOK2K, & DOSCLR
     From: DOUGFOGG To: JOHNMYSELF

I don't own Omniterm 2, John, so I don't have any first-hand experience with it.
I can tell you that DOSCLR should have no effect on its proper operation. It's
not a memory resident program. All it does is change the default monochrome
text colors in a BIOS memory area. It may, of course, affect the colors you get
while running Omniterm, but that's all.

KLOK2K does stay resident, and chains into the timer interrupt service routine
(Interrupt 1Ch), the BIOS video service routines (10h and 52h), and the keyboard
action interrupt (78h). It also uses the normally unused Interrupt C1h to
indentify when it's already resident in memory.

If the KLOK2K time display doesn't show up on the screen when using Omniterm,
and if it doesn't respond to the hotkey to turn the blanker on and off, it means
that Omniterm has hijacked the keyboard interrupt and possibly the timer and/or
video interrupts without passing them along to the previously installed routines
(KLOK2K and the default BIOS routines). There's nothing you or I can do about
that.

Have you tried Omniterm with NO resident programs? If so, what were the
results? And do all copies of the program, including the one on your original
2.11.01 DOS disk exhibit the same double-disk-write syndrome? Does the capture
buffer work okay when you're just reading messages as opposed to participating
in a conference?

Let me know; perhaps I or others watching can help.

RE: Omniterm, KLOK2K, & DOSCLR (Re: Msg 13035)
     From: JOHNMYSELF To: DOUGFOGG

Ok. Here is what I have been able to determine so far.

I installed dosclr on my system on Jul 30. Since that time, and only since then
(possibly a co-incidence?) I have had this problem using omniterm.

I get garbage in the capture buffer which results in a re-dump into the file.
The net result is that the file tends to be approximately twice the size it
should have been.

I ran over a dozen tests on the 23 and 24 of this month including using the
original (ona write protected disk) version of omniterm and with the resident
programs not loaded.

I have copies of some material I xup'd to workspace if you would like to see
what gets into the file.

I haven't a clue as to what is causing it, and I started looking at the newly
installed material first as a matter of course.

There may of course be some other explanation such as a flaky memory chip, (i
upgraded from 384 to 512 in June), or a weak power supply <iffy??>.

Right - omniterm doesn't allow the clock display but the hot keys do seem to
work as I mentioned in mail.

So far the problem is a nuisance and not much else. SPLIT will break the file
down into maneagable bits and after editing out the dups and the junk, I can
recover all relevant info. <so far>

klok2k41 seems to be having similar trouble when it tries to display the
selected hot keys. BTW: does it have a default set in case you don't say what
you want?

RE: Omniterm, KLOK2K, & DOSCLR (Re: Msg 13037)
     From: DOUGFOGG To: JOHNMYSELF

KLOK2K Version 4.1 defaults to use 300 seconds (5 minutes) for the blanking
interval, ALT-K for the clock display toggle, and ALT-B for the screen blanker
toggle. Just typing "KLOK2K" at the DOS prompt is therefore equivalent to
typing "KLOK2K 300 25 30". 25 (hex) is the extended ASCII code returned by the
ALT-K combination, and 30 (hex) is the code returned by ALT-B.

I downloaded KLOK2K41.COM last night to check that the upload was okay and it
worked fine on my machine. Both hot keys could be changed and they displayed
properly. If you use "KLOK2K 300 B6 B7", you should end up with ALT-F11 as the
clock display toggle and ALT-F12 as the blanker toggle, and the KLOK2K sign-on
screen should tell you that.

What happens when you run Omniterm with no TSRs? Do you still get garbage? If
so, I'd start checking modem connections and for the possibility of phone line
noise. You might also try running at a slower baud rate (like 300). If not,
load your TSRs one by one and retest.

I seriously doubt that DOSCLR or KLOK2K is the source of your troubles. A flaky
memory chip would probably cause other more serious problems, as would a faulty
power supply. Let me know what you find.

Mike, I downloaded my own KLOK2K the other night while checking out JOHNMYSELF's
Omniterm problem just to make sure the upload of KLOK2K was okay. It worked
fine on my machine, but I noticed that the file description says it must be
called KLOK2K41.COM on the downloadee's (is that a word?) computer. Actually,
you can call it anything you want (as long as it has a .COM extension), but
plain ol' KLOK2K.COM would probably be best. I guess the "41" part would
distinguish it as Version 4.1, but so does the file description and the
program's sign-on screen. I don't remember what I said you had to call it when
I uploaded it, but KLOK2K.COM seems simpler. No biggie.
