I have been having problems using a laser printer with a 1000TX. I write reports
which begin like:
    Name: John Doe Date: 11/1/88
Birth Date: 1/1/50 Examiner: John Smith

When I use fonts with proportional spacing, it makes the right column come out
uneven, like
     Name: John Doe Date: 11/1/88
Birth Date: 1/1/50 Examiner: John Smith I have never been
able to find a way to line up the right side column using any font with
proportional spacing, which virtually negates the fancy print that made the
printer worthwhile in the first place. Does anyone have a solution?

Regarding the issue of COMMAND.COM on the VDISK -- no, it does not work under
MS-DOS 2.11 ----- BUT ----- if you are using my MENU (or some other relatively
smart application menu) that investigates COMSPEC in the environment and directs
DOS to load additional shells from this location (as in BAT files from the menu
or dropping to DOS), you will see a noticable speed up.

As far as the addresses go, ask me specifically which addresses you are i

YUP, that's the way proportional spacing works. All letters are not the same
size and that is particularly true when trying to align columns. What are you
printing the report with? A good word processor (WordPerfect) can handle it if
you are using TABS instead of SPACES for allignment. WordPerfect sends absolute
dot positioning (X,Y) pairs for the start of each major spacing adjustment.

In most word processors, you must use a Column layout rather than Tabs, when
using proportional spacing. What this does for a two column layout is to make
two left and two right margins across the 80 column (or 132) page.

     From: DOUGFOGG To: ALL

I just got the 1.2c upgrade of WordTech System's dBXL and am sorry to report
that it has serious problems on the Tandy 2000 which version 1.2b did not. The
machine locks up with the cursor in the lower right corner of the screen when
leaving any dBXL window or menu bar (such as when you try to QUIT from the
BROWSE command or SAVE a newly CREATEd database. These problems occur when dBXL
is installed by picking the Tandy 2000 choice on the SETUP menu, and when it's
installed for IBM-compatible-but-use-INT 10 mode. These problems do not occur
if a standard or custom ANSI installaition is done via SETUP. However, dBXL
performance is much slower this way, and full-screen commands like EDIT fail to
clear the screen properly for multi-screen formats. I'm sending a detailed
written report to WordTech in hopes they'll correct the regression from 1.2b,
which worked nearly perfectly on the 2000 and solved all of the Tandy 2000
problems of Version 1.1. I'll keep y'all posted.

Some months ago I inquired about a DOS utility mentioned in PCM which was not on

because it was on DOS 3.3 (I have 3.2). The SIG members informed me that I could
get 3.3 by asking at an RS Computer-type store for the "700-series" upgrade.
The local RS stores demand I shell out a hundred bucks for DeskMate to get the
3.3 contained in the package. So, who's got the story?
Having worked for RS for several years in their stores, computer centers and
finally establishing and operating the ATSO in Charleston, SC for several years,
I know the circumstances of dealing with store personnel.

Any advice?

  Frank,

  I have seen several DeskMate 3.0 packages . . .

. . . but they do not have any DOS diskettes in them.I mean, the DeskMate
3.0 package that comes with the SL or TL has DOS 3.3, but the stand-alone
packages do not have any DOS diskette at all, unless they have started putting
  them in there recently.

If I were you, I'd go to another Radio Shack or, else, visit that store when
whoever you talked to is off and talk to someone else.

Anyway, if you have ANY older version of DeskMate, you can tear off the cover
of the DeskMate manual and trade it in for $50 off the price of DeskMate 3.0,
but I'd make them show me the DOS diskette before I believed one was in the
  stand-alone package.

I don't know the procedure for upgrading to DOS 3.3, but there must be a way
to do it without springing for DeskMate 3.0, even IF it were to have a DOS 3.3
  diskette in it.

If your old monitor was MONO, then turn dip switch #1 to the ON position. If you

that will configure to EGA. When you plug in the Vega board the SX's on-board

on the local management. It appears that Tandy may have to make a more

If it is a hardcard for the SX (or later model), yes, it will work in an IBM PC.
If it is for a T1000 or T1000A, then you must switch interrupts 2 and 5. The
first T1000's used a different bus scheme than IBM.

He must choose the correct printer device driver, within the Desktop program. In
this case, the DMP 105. There is a problem with that, as the DMP 105 is "rarely"
supported in such programs.

He "may" have some luck by loading GRAPHICS.COM (he will find it on his DOS
diskette). This is a "resident" program that prints graphics to the printer -
usually from the display screen - but, it may help.

Most hardcards do not have jumpers, at least not without soldering. The best
advice that I can give you is to call the vendor (or manufacturer) and tell them
that you desire to "change" the card to operate in an IBM. They may be able to
give you a simple fix, as they know the card well.

     From: MISAL To: KOOG

The DMP130A is able to emulate an IBM graphics printer. Print Shop is most
likely giving you a linefeed problem - this is not specific to the DMP130A. You
may need to place a small piece of Scotch tape on pin (or trace) 14 of your
printer cable. This effectively stops unwanted linefeeds.

To configure your DMP for IBM, flip switches 1,2 and 3 of DIP #2 to the on
position. After you have done this, choose IBM graphics or IBM Proprinter for
all your printer configurations.

There is a program in the JAN.88 issue of PCM that allows

many if any programs that utilize the Tandy mode..

Reggie, Thanks for the info - I saw the article in PCM. I don't quite
understand the utility of changing your settings from the DOS prompt. I'm going
crazy tring to change the setting from within Dbase III+ *.prg files that are
calling report frm's I've written. I've got the 132 in IBM mode and I'm using
the codes in the book. The best I've done is to get it to go into double wide
mode by using : STORE '?? CHR(27)+CHR(87)+CHR(ONGATE and then using &ELONGATE to
send the escape code to the printer. This works tions at all. (Why doesn't
Delphi steal PCLINKS word processor?) For one thing I can't find any mention of
a soft wear reset for the printer to get it back to it's default values. Sorry
I've gone on and on and made a mess of the typing. I'll put in a good word with

It sounds like you're ready to heave the whole kit and kabootle
out of the window. I uploaded the program I told you about. It's
not the same one that was in PCM. It's in the Utilities Database
and is called "Make you own codes". If you enter the Utility DB
and type READ, it will be displayed as it was the last file posted
there. If you did make your own print code files via this method,
you'de only be able to use them if Dbase III+ allowed you to shell
out to DOS. From the DOS prompt, you could then change your codes
with the programs you make. You could make a file for each code listed
in your printer book (changing to and from IBM to Tandy modes, BOLD,
compressed, or whatever codes you make a file for. I also think there
might be a memory resident file that allows changing codes for the
DMP-130 by hitting a HOT key from within any program. These, I'm sure,
would be the same codes as your printer.

I'll check on it for you.

Keep the faith baby,
