I have tried to hook-up a SAMSUNG Monochrome monitor (MD-1252G) using a
Mono/graphic card (from SUNTEK Corp.) in one of my expansion slots 0f the T1000.
IT DOES NOT WORK. Has anyone had success in putting a non/Radio Shack

my configuration from working ?!?!

I think what is happening is, the program is telling the controller to step to a
specific area of the disk (track, sector). Being a high density drive and
controller, your head is only going half way to where the program wants it. You
will find the same problem if you copy a regular program from a low density disk
using COPYIIPC to a high density disk. Although the pro gram may run the
information will be in different physical places on the disk. The high density
drive can step twice as many tracks as a normal drive. John

The Harddisk is manufactured by Zuckerboard and is a 20 megabyte external

     Microsoft Quick C
     From: TH To: ALL

In regards to the question of Microsoft Quick C running properly on a Tandy
1000, I have the following observation: I just purchased Quick C and immediately
tried to compile and run the graphics demo program which came with the package.
It compiled just fine but gets a "6003 integer divide by 0" runtime error. After
debugging, I found that there is a problem in the _getvideoconfig routine. This
routine is supposed to return the current graphics environment configuration.
Unfortunately, it returns 0 for numxpixels and numypixels. These variables are
used as a divisor in the grdemo program and therefore cause the divide by zero
error. The problem must be in the way the Tandy returns its video configuration
parameters. Since I am a novice at C, just starting to take up the language, I
may not be entirely correct on this, but I do feel there is definitely a problem
with Quick C's handling of T1000 graphics. The compiled program does run ok on
an IBM AT which I use at work so there probably is not a problem with the
compiler itself. The _getvideoconfig routine is used with quite a few other
graphics routines, which does not bode well for a T1000 owner.

I feel that Microsoft should correct this problem since I have not seen
another language such as Quick Basic or Turbo Pascal show this type of problem.
There must be enough Tandy 1000's out there to justify fixing this, if only to
get the Tandy 1000 owners to buy the program. If anyone else has found problems
of this sort, please post them in the forum. Also, if you have fixes for these
problems, it would be nice to see them on the forum also. If there is anyone
else out there who is using Quick C on a T1000, please let me know if you have
the same problem on your machine.

The 1000's video drivers are on the motherboard and allow CGA and COMPOSITE
signals. This is the reason you are not picking up the correct signals on the
bus expansion slots. I am not sure if there is an easy way to do this, perhaps
others have found a way.

I assume that you mean "MS-DOS for Programmers" and my recommendation there has
to be "Advanced MS-DOS - the Microsoft guide for Assembly Language and C

programmers and he certainly is an excellent author -- easy to read and clear.

While you are at it, you should invest in Peter Norton's Programmers Guide to

The only short comming that I see, on the added editor in PCPLUS is that it does
not print. I usually download into a buffer. then edit in a word processor and
print what ever is saved. Any how, the new additions look good. Hope you fellows
enjoy it also.

yes, i had the same problem. i suspect you're right in your analysis. i didnt
try to troubleshoot once i figured out what was going on; i figure if they cant
even write a demo which is reasonably bullet proof ( it crashes on one of the
most popular clones , or hangs the system badly enough to require reboot !),
then how can i feel that the guts of the compiler are really ok?

the basic documentation is good, but the on-disk stuff was not very useful. i
found the linker error messages to be pretty useless too.

you'd think that MS, of all companies, would have the resources and knowledge to

what more can i say? i put it back in the box and returned for the promised

(the lights go on at boot) You get a clean boot from drive A: with a DOS

Oh, yeah, there's no problem getting to the hard card or anything off of it. I

I'm on a 1000SX (if that helps??) Will the machine do a system diags on drive C:

the BIOS ROM message to come up. I thought it might also be checking the new
drive.

I just put this thing in tonight and I've never had one before. It's working
fine so far.

I'm just trying to make things EASY on myself -- you know, sit at the keyboard

I'm jumping right in the middle of this thread so please don't spit or throw
things <he, he, snurk>.

I assume you have been successful in running FDISK from the floppy to partition
the hard disk. You should not have to run HSECT on the disk if FDISK has been
successful.

Assuming that you got this far, did you boot from a floppy disk and then perform
a SYS C: from the floppy drive to write the DOS boot files to the hard disk or,
better yet, format the drive with the FORMAT command and the "/S" parameter to
transfer the files. A hard disk formatted with the "/S" paramter will show 3
files (or 4 if you used the "/V" option and specified a label) and a lot of
blank space on it when you run CHKDSK from the floppy drive.

On a disk prepared using the SYS command you will have to manually install
COMMAND.COM from your floppy disk using the DOS COPY command. When you have the
unit to this point (showing COMMAND.COM in the root directory), your disk should
boot.

Are you using DOS 3.2 on the 1000SX? If not and the hard card is over 10 MB,
get it! You will really appreciate the better DOS allocation scheme. Matter of
fact, you may want to reformat the hard disk with 3.2 because most of them were
prepared using DOS version 2.x and the larger hard disk cards use an 8 KB
cluster which wastes a tremendous amount of space. You won't be able to
recognize the DOS 3.2 advantage on this unit unless you reformat.

If you do reformat the disk, use the FORMAT C:/S/V command and put a label on
your hard disk. This will prevent you or anyone else from inadvertently
formatting your hard disk unless they are able to remember and type in the
disk's volume name (label) --- a very nice improvement under DOS 3.2.

Yeah, I'm on DOS 3.2, John. THe disk came already formatted. When I checked
it, it had the two hidden files and Command.Com and they were the same size as
the ones I have with 3.2, so I assumed they were the same files. The disk is a
single partition, 30 Meg, which I believe is acceptable (isn't it???)

I've started copying some files over to it and everything seems to be working
just fine. It's even a WD controller, which from what I've gleened of messages
in the forum, is the one that should present the least problems to my T1000SX.

I'm gonna stop loading files now, tho. I'm afraid you're gonna say I hafta go
back and reformat it, which means I've been wasting my time until now.

I'll be anxiously waiting. Keith

Reggie,
And I had a message ready to upload, but yes, it is true... procomm plus's
editor does trash your drive. I noticed that after my first try. I always run a
chkdsk after any new program (commercial or otherwise) to check that. I went
right to my normal wp, the same I use('d) with all previous versions of procomm.
Other than that... I find I hate it that I can't bring up the name of my script
files like the past.
For Earl, I find the menu key thing a pest. The scan code is ok, but even tho
you can select the tilde in setup, obviously the main program does not watch for
the key the same way that Setup gets it. I finally gave it ] as the hot key. The
thing is.. I'll hardly ever use the menu display.
Did they really beta test this????? Also, no notes at all for previous users of
procomm. No conversion utility. I finally wrote one to convert my 40+ script
files. After all this, is it good? Yep.

Of course they beta tested it. Probably on one type of modem, an IBM PC, and
only at 1200 or 2400 baud. Nobody could have tested the editor thorouly, or
tried to dial from the dialing list at 300 baud. You have to dial 300 baud via a
macro to use it. A lot of EGA users are complaining of a blue haze on their
screens. And no. They didn't even mention anything much about Procomm 2.4.2 or
the other versions that got them where they are today. I'm sure that at least
90% or better of their PC+ orders, are from the O_L_D Procomm faithful.....

Reggie,
Make sure you have the correct stuff in the Connect setup, or have Auto Baud
detect OFF is you are having trouble. You MUST have the modem english very
correct. If one looks like another, then you're in trouble. The best thing would
be to turn auto baud detect off if you are having trouble. I am haveing no
probem at all after I fine tuned the response words and I run with auto on.
 I have just re cehecked, and 1) 300 baud works, and 2) 1200 7/e/1, 8/n/1 etc
work. This is my modem string:

number, is to leave the dialing directory. I'll keep playing with it and maybe
I'll find the right stuff....

reason it wasn't getting recognized. Everything works instantaniously now. The

You say it "won't print." If you were more specific, perhaps we could help you

just plain won't do anything at all?

If extra line feeds is the problem, then you may be in luck and can fix it by
taping over pin 14 on the printer cable.

     Null Character
     From: SKIDKID To: MISAL

Mike, typing ESC {space} F7 gave me an arrow pointing left (the ESC) and then
nothing. Do you know if there's a symbol of some sort that corresponds to the
Null Character? I can pust CTRL and other keys and the combination will
generate different symbols (like those found in PC Write).

I tried just typing ^@ (the carat from the 6 key and the @ from the 2 key) and
that was not the right combo either. The printer simply printed the @ for me.

I think I've punched every possible key that I can in combination with the CTRL
key and just can't come up with whatever it is this program is looking for.

I'm stumped!! Any other ideas??

Earl,

I have found that PCPLUS, for some reason, does not acknowledge the
PATH set enviroment. I normally use LIST.COM to read text files and could not
get PCPLUS to look for in through my PATHS. You can make it work by placing
your word processor/editor in the same directory as PCPLUS.

MODE MONO On an old T1K
     From: RGEN To: ALL

I keyed MODE MONO at the DOS prompt MS-DOS 2.11... The screen goes completely
blank (a Ghostly White!). I find no mention of the MONO keyword in my Tandy DOS
manual. Does Mono serve any purpose, or is it just something left in the MODE
code that is worthless on the TANDY-1000?? .. I was hoping to hook up a
monochrome monitor to the T1K, but it looks hopeless, unless I get A Tandy
composite monitortor, which is not the resolution I hoped to achieve....

     From: BEACHBUM To: RGEN

The MODE MONO command is used if you have both a monochrome monitor and a
CGA connected to your computer. This command shifts from CGA to Monochrome
screen.

The MODE commands you most likely should be using are MODE CO80 and MODE
BW80. These shift from color to black-n-white displays. The MODE command
also has several other useful functions.

I'm not sure how you would go about hooking a non-Tandy monochrome monitor to
the old T1K. The T1K has a Color Graphics Adapter built into it, so it
does not accept other boards like an EGA or Hercules cards.

The correct control/key is CTRL @ for a null, Keith. The character produced is a
very small (1), in - as you see, parenthesi

Give this a shot ESC ! @ (27 33 64). That should send ASCII 0 to your printer.
At least it did when I just tried it.

Tandy's syntax for video mode is:

MODE BW {characters per line, default is 80}
MODE CO {"              "                 "}

Where BW is Black and White (or mono) and CO is Color.

You can also set the "scan" lines with:

MODE 200 (or 255)

I did call Microsoft and they told me that the problem was known and it was
about the only thing that did not work on the T1000. I did try some graphics
routines using only set_videomode and they worked fine. The only problem is that
if programs were written using get_videomode (which is encouraged in the manual)
they will not run on the T1000. Therefore we can all look forward to many public
domain and shareware programs that will not run on a T1000.

Don't apologize for the looks of your message. It seems almost nobody can figure
out how to use this editor right, myself included. (Maybe it's my Procomm VT100
emulator that causes the problems.) Most of the time I just exit and use
PC-Write to write a message and then use ASCII upload to load it into the
message. That seems to work about as well as anything.

     Null character

Well, Mike, I surrender. I've tried everything and cannot get the program to
recognize anything as a null character. I think I'm gonna just go ahead and
register my copy of the program (Automenu) and send them a letter along with the
registration fee, asking for the solution to this problem.

The program works great other than that. Being able to select printer fonts
from a menu is a very nice feature for me tho.

I appreciate the time and trouble with this one. If you think of anything else
I'm always popping in here trying to learn more.

Thanx again for the input, Keith

Afraid I have exhausted all the ways that I have ever tried/heard of to get a
null to the printer. Perhaps Automenu expects a certain character or string of
characters which it then interprets and sends to the printer. Let me know how
you make out.

Editing Forum Messages (Re: Msg 12237)
     From: JIMREED To: TH

Tom,

In Forum, when you use ADD or REPLY to create a message, you start out in a
"mini-editor." Many folks don't realize this. To see for yourself, during a
message, type /HELP at the beginning of a line and you'll see:

/LIST - lists all lines typed
/DELETE - erases the last line
  /EDIT - invokes your editor
  /EXIT - same as Control-Z
  /QUIT - same as Control-C

But, for more sophisticated editing, use the /ED (all commands must be at the
beginning of a line) to call up either the EDT or OLDIE editors, whichever you
have selected as your default editor by using the Set Preferences selection from
the SIG menu.

You can begin your message in the edit mode in Forum with ADD/EDIT and REPLY
/EDIT.

In Mail, you can use SEND/EDIT and REPLY/EDIT at the MAIL> prompt. This will
invoke your editor initially. But, once you have begun a Mail message, you
cannot invoke the editor in mid-message.

Hope this is helpful.
