As for the VEGA board, they have a money back compatibility guarentee on the

withhold comment on the grounds that it may incriminate me!

     HARD DRIVES with 1000SX
     From: JIMGAR To: JOEPIERCE

Hi, Joe. For my first question of the new year, I need some advice on my rst,
the tech stuff. The drive is a Seagate ST-238R, 30 meg RLL. The controller is a
DATA TECH Corp. FAB NO 01-00342 REV E. Probably a dirt cheap
controller....but.... <sigh> the price was right. The cables are
self-explanatory <heehee>. Now for the hard part <drum
roll>.....compatibility.......help? Here is the meat of the question...How do I
tell how to configure the card? There are several jumpers, which I assume are
set up for a more normal type of compatible. There are also 4 interrupt switches
on the motherboard. My evaluation of the situation at this time is that A) I
must change the interrupt switches to work with the controller. B) I also will
have to reset one or more jumpers on the controller card. Gee, I guess I went
and painted myself into a corner yet again. If you can shed any light, I sure
would appreciate it. Thanks. Jim.

s: TROJAN ALERT

     cc: SYSOP

12/27/87

There have recently been several trojan/hacked/pirated versions
of PKARC/PKXARC showing up.

The most vicious of the bunch is called NEWARKR.EXE. This is
a (PKSFX) self-extracting file, but contains no DOCS. The
programs PKXARC, PKARC, and PKSFX have been renamed to XARKR,
ARKR, and RKSFX respectively. The PKWARE copyright has been
removed from these programs, along with PKWARE's address and
all references to ShareWare. The Copyright notice has been
replaced with the phrase "Public Domain Software". These
programs have been modified in other means too, and their
reliability is unknown.

Equally malicious, there has been a trojan patch for PKXARC that
has been cirulated. It is a copy of a valid message from me
posted on USENET, except the patch given in the message has been
changed to write directly to the FAT and wipe out disk C.

There have been also various files circulated claiming to be
PKARC/PKXARC versions 3.6 and 5.3. These are all hacked or
pirated.

The perpetrators of these hacks are guilty of Copyright infringement,
theft, libel with malice, or other applicable crimes. PKWARE Inc. will
seek to prosecute these individuals to the fullest extent of the law.

If you see any file claiming to be a new version of PKARC/PKXARC
or a patch to those programs, and are unsure of their origin,
please check the following BBS's for the authentic files:

PKWARE BBS 414-352-7176
EXEC-PC 414-964-5160
RBBS OF CHICAGO 312-352-1035
SOUND OF MUSIC 516-536-8723

If you do encounter any hacked or pirated files, please inform
the SYSOP of the system with these files to delete them immediately.
Please also inform PKWARE inc. of these files, their origin, and all
other information that you have available. We can be reached
at either any of the above BBS numbers, or 414-352-3670 voice.
Only with your help can these very sick individuals be prevented
from causing harm to unsuspecting victims of these hacked and

Well, Joe, you know what you get when you buy at shows.....Sorry, no docs. I
called the vendor, who informed me that the controller was not compatible with
the Tandy. Further investigation revealed that I have one of the best
controllers available! I got this from a local friend who is an IBM as a reply
to you for convenience, and I hope you will pass it on, perhaps even within the
pages of PCM. First, I disabled IRQ 5 by the switch on the motherboard by the
BIOS chip. Switch #2 disables Interrupt 5. My terminology may be incorrect, but
it is the right switch. Second, the disk requires UNCONDITIONAL FORMAT!! In
other words, the lowest level format available. This is accomplished by entering
DEBUG, and typing "G=C800:5". This reads the controller rom, and prompts you for
disk specifications. Have your spec sheet (packaged with drive) ready when you
do this. It tells the rom how to tell the computer how to talk to the drive,
once it is formatted. Then, go to FDISK, and partition the drive. From there,
all that is left is to format the partition, and start using the drive. It seems
the cheap drives come TOTALLY unformatted. Hope this helps others. However, in
CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!! DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THERE IS NOTHING
IMPORTANT ON THE DRIVE!!!!! You WILL lose ALL data on the drive!! Thanks. Jim.

RE: HARD DRIVES with 1000SX (Re: Msg 11970)
     From: JOEPIERCE To: JIMGAR

I know all about low-level formatting Jim -- you will find that all hard disks
come unformatted from the factory. Sometimes dealers or VARs will format them
before they make their way to the public, but 99.999% of the time the end user
has to do the low level.

Glad to hear that the standard g=c800:5 deal worked out. I was afraid to
suggest that to you without some type of reference point to work from -- I
generally hate to give advice from "left field" because it ususally gets me in
trouble ;-)

Anyhow, I'm glad that it's working - flipping dip 2 will *USUALLY* solve the
interrupt incompatility with most controllers.

Yes, there are hard disks available for the 1000EX. Tandy now offers a Western
Digital Controller for the EX via their catalog that will allow you to hook up
the standard external Tandy hard disk. A company called Hard Disk Specialists
also sells a variety of EX compatible external drives - they have a big add in
PCM that you might want to check out.

As for downloading with DeskMate 1, it does not support a protocol. Therefore
you should either get rid of it and use something else (Procomm, Telix, Qmodem,
etc). Or you can get XMATE from the PCM database in the PC comaptibles SIG. It
is a memory resident add-on to DeskMate that provides support for Xmodem
protocol.

Yes Mark. With you printer turned on and, the Qmodem Doc file
on the disk that you are using ( A or B ), type COPY QMODEM.DOC PRN
and press the RETURN key..
I assume you have a DMP-130 printer. Make sure it's in the IBM
mode and before you type the stuff above, put your Dos disk with
GRAPHICS.COM in and type GRAPHICS and press Return. Choose option
3 for compatibles. For some reason, this seems to stop the printer
from hanging up....

You won't have to upgrade your power supply.

If you buy the right kind of 3.5-inch floppy (such as the one Tandy sells) you
won't have to get a new controller.

The line keeps jumping because this "editor" doesn't support word wrap. You have
to hit RETURN at the end of each line...

always seems to be so overpriced to me when it comes to adding anything to the

Hi- I downloaded CHOOSE MENU BATCH after reading about it in PCM. It sounded
just like what I needed for my kids to select their programs from. But it does
not want to run on my T2000. Their is no highlight on the first letter of each
choice. The selection s are on the screen correctly. When I press the first
letter of my choice the full name of the program is displayed after the choices
and then the A> appears twice. Do you have any suggestions as to what is wrong?
I tried running both MS-DOS versions 2.11. 03 and 2.11.02 with equal
results-neither worked. Sure would like to get this program to work. Thanks for
your help.

aggravating though not to be able to run everything you want to. I just got
burned with an upgrade for Amortizer III that does not run on the T2K. The

bothered to tell me that it wouldn't work. So be careful. What software are you

     Fix Dates on Model-III/4
     From: DOSWIZZ To: ALL

Attention all Radio Shack Model-III and Model-4 owners: Have
you been faithful and kept your old machines? Do you use
LDOS 5.1.4 or TRSDOS 6.2.1? Have you failed to upgrade your
operating systems to correct the date problems because you
did not want to buy two totally new operating systems just to
correct the inability to enter 1988 and beyond dates?

Well, I must say that I fall into all of these categories and
I have located a complex set of patches that use LDOS/TRSDOS
JCL to apply themselves to backup copies of the master disks.
Unlike other patches claiming to fix these problems with the
simple application of a date correction to a few SYS
overlays, this is a complete change to the operating system
that adapts it to the newer date scheme in a manner similar
to those offered by his majesty, Roy Soltoff, and others.

Download LU31.CMD and LDOS514.LBR for your Model-III LDOS
5.1.4 system. Use LU31.CMD to unpack LDOS514.LBR to a clean
disk and follow the documentation. LU4.CMD and TRSDOS62.LBR
are similar files for use with the Model-4/4p/4D.

         Enjoy,

         John Harrell

RE: PCM Article (Re: Msg 11981)
     From: AMSEL To: RSH

Yes, there is a limit to the number of characters that can be included in the
Prompt command = 128 bytes. If you have a Comspec statement or a Path statement,
the number of characters contained in them is subtracted from the 128 which
would be available to Prompt.

All of these statements are contained in your "environment"--a part of memory
that MS-DOS reserves for keeping track of current settings (including those made
via the Set command). Unless a different environment size is specified, MS-DOS
defaults to 128 bytes.

To change the size of your environment, you must start a new command processor
and use the /E switch. For instance, at the C:\> prompt, type Command /E:500 to
change your environment size to 500 bytes. The biggest size you can ask for is
32768 bytes. For more info, see your DOS manual. (By the way, I'm assuming you
have DOS 3.2. I'm not sure if the /E switch works on earlier versions.) Hope
this helps.

Pick up a copy of the Computer Shopper and flip through it. There are several
mail order outfits selling 3.5-inch drives that will work in the SX. Just tell
the dealer you want one that will work in an XT and you'll be OK.

As for an alternate DELPHI editor -- it's DEC's EDT which can function as a

RE: PCM Article (Re: Msg 12014)
     From: DOSWIZZ To: AMSEL

First of all, let me clear up a misconception -- there is no effective limit to
the PATH, PROMPT, COMSPEC, or any other variable because of environment size.
If you have booted a clean system with no terminate-and-stay resident programs,
DOS will automatically expand the environment from its DEFAULT of 160 bytes (not
128) up to 32KB. Load any TSR or a batch file and the environment size is
locked at the DEFAULT condition of 160 bytes + whatever you put in there.
Furthermore, any TSR you load creates a new copy of the master environment block
that is only as large as the strings (+ the complete path name of the executing
program under DOS 3.x and higher). For example, supposing you start out with a
1024 byte environment block and allocate only 448 bytes in the master
environment block. Each subsequent block will only be this big or smaller (or
slightly larger by 16 bytes in rare occasions) and you can never get back to the
1024 bytes.

You are correct about using COMMAND.COM to allocate more but the method is
wrong.  You should use a command in CONFIG.SYS ---> SHELL=COMMAND.COM /E:xxxx
/P to load the command interpreter with a larger environment block and the "/P"
switch tells the Command Interpreter to run AUTOEXEC.BAT on startup. This works
under all versions of DOS 3.x: under 3.0 and 3.1 the "xxxx" above specified the
number of paragraphs and under 3.2 and 3.3 the "xxxx" specifies the number of
bytes.

For DOS version 2.x, you can accomplish the same thing by patching COMMAND as I
indicated in one of my articles in PCM. If you (or anyone else) are interested,
drop me a message and I'll upload the procedure for patching COMMAND.COM under
DOS 2.1.

Hope this clarifies the conversation.

Oh, by the way, there is a 128 character limit on DOS statements and this may
affect your variable sizes but there are ways around this limitation.

There is fully no practical reason why a PATH statement cannot be up to 32K in
length (except you might get real tired typing it in)

Hi folks: Long time since I have added anything to this Sig. I do follow it

The neighbor next door on my north side had a break and enter this week. He lost
all of his electronic equipment, including his computer.

The neighbor to the South has been hit twice. The neighbor to the West across
the street has been hit twice. Being on a canal, in Florida (canal to the East)
I know nothing about any thievery in that direction.

Believe it or not this happens in broad daylight and not on rainy days (you
would'nt want the robbers to get wet). (Do you suppose that I am due)?

I am looking for a simple addition to my autoexec bat file that would include a
password. I have gotten as far as having my name and address to appear upon
booting. My intention is to have my name and address appear upon booting, then
halt for a password. If stolen the thief and any one else that tried to boot it
would get no farther than to list the owners name and address. This might get
the computer back (fat chance) and possibly protect my files from becoming
public.

I took it for granted that you all knew that I am booting into a hard drive.

Any bright ideas will be appreciated.

1. The 16K TRS-80 Model 4 may be worth $50.00.
 2. The RAM is expandable to 128K, but to do so, you need to buy not only the
RAM chips ($20 to $30, I would guess) but a PAL chip (the latter only if you go
beyond 64K).
 3. Disk drives are available from Aerocomp and from Radio Shack, but you'll
probably put $250 or more in them ($450 if you buy from Radio Shack, and you
still have only single-sided drives; however a DOS does come with the interface)
, and another $80 or so for an RS-232 interface.
 4. The DOS is called TRSDOS, and it is obsolete as of 12/31/87. You have to
buy LS-DOS 6.3 from Logical Systems, Inc. (mandatory upgrade), and it does not
come with a manual, only with change pages to the TRSDOS 6.2 manual. LS-DOS is
$40, and (as I indicated above) TRSDOS comes with the disk drives.
An alternatative DOS is CP/M, from Montezuma Micro (actually the same owner as
Aerocomp), but they want $169 for it.
I would say if you're not already into Model 4, forget it.
If your hear were *really* set on one, the Model 4D (two double-sided drives)
is on sale at the Radio Shack right now for $699. I'd be willing to bet you

the stores know about it).

I think you and SOGWAP are talking "apples and oranges". DOS 2.x and 3.x will
let me run COM3 and COM4 software as long as the software can properly arbitrate
the proper IRQ lines correctly as these older units have to share physical
hardware interrupt resources with COM1 and COM2.

DOS Version 3.3 was the first to officially support 19,200 baud and COM3 and
COM4 because these were additions to the PS/2 lines. In fact of matter, I have
not tried using these features on a standard PC to see if they work because the
port addresses for these UART chips on the PS/2 are totally alien to the
addresses used on the PC. DOS can contend with these additional resources on
the PS/2 as it has another interrupt controller and additional IRQ lines to
allow each COM port to be handled individually.

You're probably right. A local integrator is putting together PC clones and
selling them; currently a ready-to-use turbo XT with mono graphics (forget the
name, but it's the hi-res one by a third party) and a 30 meg HD is selling it
for $1295. You can get them much cheaper, but "cheap" is the operative word. I
intended you to realize that a 16K Model 4 was worth nearly nothing, and the
cost of upgrading it was probably more than you wanted to pay. I have an
upgraded 16K Model 4, by the way, and would not recommend thatanyone do the same
thing unless he were a hardware expert (I am not, and have suffered problems

No, I did not ask for the 1.44 meg disk format. However, since the 1.44 meg
drive Tandy installs can read/write to 720k with no problems, this did not seem
to be an issue. I have " many " other pieces of commercial software on 720k 3.5
disks, and they run correctly. What do you think ??

Whan I say the programs don't work correctly, bear with me and I will
elaborate. The Microsoft Flight Simulator runs fine the first round through. You
can take off, etc with no problems. If you crash, however, the disk will not
read correctly the second round through.
The problem with the Jet Sublogic game is this. On the left and right portions
of the screen there are white bars that move up and down ( solid bars ) showing
how high you are, and your speed. When these bars move up, showing the increase,
all is well. But if your speed or altitude decrease, these bars do not move back
down. They just stay up, causing you to lose track of where you are.

This would appear to be software related. These programs are now " PS/2 "
compatible. This may be creating the problem.

                    Thanks for your patience

T1000A for a while, with no glitches at all. The entire Borland family of
Languages appear to work on the 1000 family, unless of course stated so on the

Get MS QuickC because of the debugging environment and the full access to big

products run on the Tandy 1000, 1000A, 1000SX, 1000TX. I can only guess that
they do on the hx/ex but they should. Note that the memory size may limit some
things, but I have run all their language products on an original T1k, and
currently on a T1k-TX.
This is my opinion, and not an official Borland answer. I can only give that in

The 8088 -- an 8-bit computer sold to the world as a 16 bit computer. Would not
want to wager how well my Model-4p with 512K of memory, a good fast hard disk,
double-sided 40 track drives would stand up in comparison to the putrid little
PC. With the advent of the 8/16 bit 8MHz pin-compatible processor replacement
for the Z-80 (yes, Charles, there is a tooth fairy), even some of the more
powerful PC Clones can be in jeopardy. Besides, TRSDOS/LDOS is a far better
disk operating system than the CP/M replacement known as MSDOS and OS/2. Why
who ever would have thought of password protection for files, scatter loaded
disk allocation for better disk utilization, a directory in the MIDDLE of the
disk instead of at one of the ends, a hash-coded directory structure providing
extremely rapid file location and quite a bit more.

Besides, these operating systems have had TSRs for all time being as well as
configurable device drivers providing TRUE device redirection and easy
operation. AND if you get tired of these true operating systems you have the
versatility to fall back on CP/M 2.2 from Montezuma, a truly inspired version of
the operating system with the entire BIOS code written in actual Z-80 assembler
language vice some 8080 port. Fast as h***!

Now for the brain-dead 80286 -- consider that you have to switch to protected
mode to read any memory above the 1MB boundary and there is no simple way to get
out of protected mode. How do you write even simple software like VDISK.SYS
under these conditions. You switch into protected mode to access the memory and
then LIE to the BIOS code and force a SOFT REBOOT OF THE SYSTEM to get out. Is
that any way to run an operating system?

That, among other things, is the primary reason I don't like the 80286. It was
not designed to run multi-tasking operating systems AND maintain the MS-DOS
environment. In fact, this support is achievable ONLY under the 80386 and
future processors which were designed with a specific "virtual 86" mode for
protected operation. Suffice to say, the only multi-tasking system that i have
used on an 80286 is XENIX and it has problems. Look at the plethora of new 386
operating systems that have surfaced. That must say something for the ability
of the 386 to support the multi-tasking environment and the MS-DOS crummy
programs at the same time. Now you can run LOTUS and dBASEd at the same time as
some other outstanding REAL applications.

Hmmm ... I'm not sure about the reviews. You may try by asking Joe Pierce who
appears to be very knowledgable (?) on these matters. Yes, wondering if you
should cough up the bucks kinda' gives you that knot in your stomach ( or fear
in your mind ) on whether it will run correctly.
As far as I know, Turbo C should work for you.

Ah Mike, I see your point. However, FS loads correctly this first time and I
would have to assume that It checks tracks etc for copy protection at that time.
Why it would fail on the second pass after I crash is unknown to me.
 What do you think ??

     Tandy 2000 blow out!
     From: JIMREED To: DOSWIZZ

  John,

Since I know you are "into" the Tandy 2000, I thought you might like to know
that there are still some 2000s left, even though they are on the Computer
  Center "spiff" list for $157.

Yes, just $157 gets you a Tandy 2000 with two floppy drives! I bought one and
I know a few other people have, too.

If you, or others, are interested, the Nashville Computer store seems to have
a bunch on them, if your own area does not.

The 10 Meg hard disk is just $199, but you need a $350 controller to use it.

Hi, Mike. I thought I had read at one time that there was a program available
to disable call waiting. I've looked through the Tandy specific area, but am
unable to find it. (... or was it just a dream I had??) If there is such an
animal, could you let me know where I might locate it. I've grown tired of being
cut off in the middle of a session.

I don't think you need a program to disable CALL WAITING, just use *80 (or #80)
on your touchtone phone or 1180 on your rotary phone. I don't have call waiting
so I can confirm that these work, but that is what I heard. Also, not all phone
companies support these.

Staff Note: The last I heard, you disable call waiting with *70 for touch
tone, or 1170 for dial phones. -- Jim Reed

CPANEL.COM is a utility for the Microsoft Mouse that allows you to adjust things
like double click response, etc, etc. It's a memory resident deal -- It's been
a long time since I messed with it (way over a year) but I believe that ALT C
activates it.

Ha! I knew it - I knew that this would get an in depth opinion from you. I am
waiting for some type of standard in the 386, before running out and getting
one. IBM's method of switching between protected and real modes, stinks. I mean,
really, have the software shutdown the 386 and then have the motherboard detect
and reset the processor! Kludge-crap. There are easier and more effective ways.
Software development is surely being hindered for lack a standard in this area.
IBM tried to get cute, thinking that "they" will not ever in their wildest
dreams think that we would use "this" method, to clone us. They were correct, of
course, but it only serves to hurt the end user.

C/PM is a pain in the ---, especially under dBASE II. I just plyed with it last
night. It made me remember how much I hated it.

Thanks for the opinion, John. Broadens horizons, so to speak.

Sure Keith, the Call Waiting fix is not really a program, but a small text file
that tells you how it is done. You can find it in the Telcom. Topic of the
PC-Compatibles SIG. Be aware that this fix works in most areas of the country
but not all.

To disable call waiting from a touch-tone phone dial *70 to disable from a
pulse-dial phone dial 1170 No special program is needed. The disable only lasts
for the length of one call however. So if you hangup or do not connect, before
re-dialing you must also redial the disable code. Hope this helps <<<LADD>>>
