Several of the "new happenings" have already been discussed in messages 12805,
12806 and 12817, Chris. However, there are two Conferences scheduled for the
month of July that should prove interesting. Bob Jack and Jim Pile (PCM
contributing editors and respected authorities in the computer field) will host
these Conferences.

Also, if you have not noticed, many new programs are filtering in to the
Database Topics. This is due to a nation-wide 'search and secure' policy that we
have adopted.

From now on, blurbs will be posted in Forum on "tomorrows happenings". These are
releases from manufacturers, dealers and OEM's, that have "just been released"
and affect most users.

There is more, but firm plans are still being formulated!

Did you know that we will see a 33 Mhz version of the 386 in the first quarter
of 1989, with a 40 Mhz version currently under test?

Have you heard of MATHEMATICA?

     From: DOSWIZZ To: ALL

Tandy 2000 users note:

I have uploaded a ASCII text patch file as TURBO.T2K which allows you to use the
TURBO.TPL library and CRT Unit from Borland's Turbo Pascal Version 4.0 without
causing a machine lockup. You have to run the unit in the BIOS mode setting
"DirectVideo" to FALSE but you may use all of the functions including the Delay
statement which also did not work correctly.

Download the ASCII text file and apply the patches to TURBO.TPL using DEBUG or
any disk editor.

P.S. The file will be located in the PC Compatibles DATA BAS under the Tandy

Try a power-line R.F. filter. If this doesn't work then your 2000 is actually
transmitting to the T.V. antenna - in which case your need to squelch the
frequency being transmitted. Your local Radio Shack can help with this.

There are filters that go on the end of the cable connector 'just before' it
connects to a T.V., Jim. If you get a herringbone pattern-type interference then
it can be corrected (this is the usual problem). The filter is only $2.95 (R.S.
15-577 - Coaxial Inline FM Trap). Unless the 2000 puts out a signal so close to
the one that the T.V. expects, this will do it.

One other that "may" work with the 2000 is R.S. 15-579 ($3.95). This is to
reduce/stop CB and HAM radio interference. It is a high-pass filter and just
'may' be very close to the spurious signal that the 2000 is generating.

  Thanks, Mike,

  I'll check out those filters . . .

. . . as they are certainly cheap enough to try. The "interference" though is
not the "herringbone" pattern, but rather it causes a general downgrade in the
picture quality with a lot of snow, sort of like seeing something from a
station far away and out of your antenna range.

It happens on the set nearest the 2000 (about four feet away) and it seems to
be carried on the cable TV lines to the TV in the living room, but does not
bother the set in the bedroom at all -- yet it is hooked up to the same cable
  TV lines.

It affects the picture quality, but not the sound.

The T.V. that is 4 feet from the 2000 may actually be picking up the signal
through its tuner shield - for this, there is little that can be done. That is,
unless you want to internally shield the T.V. or the 2000.

The fact that the bedroom T.V. receives no interference through the cable line
leads me to believe that this interference is also being radiated directly to
the livingroom T.V. - is this T.V. close to the 2000 (disregard existing
structures and use straight line-of-sight)?

though your bedroom TV is far enough away and the signal is weak enough for the
tuner to "clean it up". While the other two TVs may be too close for the tuner
to handle. This can also be the case when it comes to the actual cable! After

I am using the pct286 card in a 1000A with minimal problems. I occassionally
get a lock up inside wordstar 4 (usually when trying to save & continue while
working on a large file) and once in Dac-Easy base. I forget what I was doing
at the time. Otherwise no problems. I'm always running at high speed. I'm also
using a pbj-multi-function board and Southwestern Digital 31mb hard card. Maybe
something in one of your other slots is confusing matters. I hope this helps (at
least to know it generally works. ) P.S. WS4 hangs up on me at slowspeed also
under the same circumstances, that is why I don't think it is related to the 286
card.

If you are trying to bypass DOS asking for the time and date, just make an
autoexec file. This will eliminate DOS from asking. If you are asking this
because you do not have a real time clock, and want DOS to recognize the time
and date read from a file, I have BAD news for you. While you could get the
time and date into a file with DOS redirection, getting it back to be read
durring boot-up is another story. To get it into a file do the following:

    TIME > DT.DAT
    DATE >> DT.DAT

Notice the TWO greater than signs in the DATE line. This APPENDS the
information to the end of the file. Good luck, if you need more help give me a
yell.

     the 8K minimum
     From: JIMREED To: DOSWIZZ

  John,

I have been housecleaning my hard disk . . .

. . . and am wondering about something I think you have written about before.
Whenever I delete a small file -- such as a batch file of maybe 200 bytes --
I get 8K more space available on the hard disk. I am using a Tandy 2000 with
  Tandy 10 Meg hard disk.

That's a peculiarity of the Tandy 2000 isn't it? Or, is it just that 10 Meg
hard drive? I mean, those files don't take that much space on floppies.

Could you please refresh my memory as to where any articles on this subject
  are to be found?

Is there a way to make my umpteen batch files take up less hard disk space?

I keep so much junk on my hard disk that it is running over constantly. I just
cleared out about 900,000 bytes, but that can be eaten up quickly.

Yes, I have some stuff on there I seldom use, but would like to keep it on the
hard disk if I can manage the files a bit better.

RE: the 8K minimum (Re: Msg 12877)
     From: BEACHBUM To: JIMREED

The reason for the 8k is that when your hard disk was formatted, it was
divided into many 'clusters'. Each cluster has a size of 8k. Clusters are
the unit of space that are allocated to files. Example: A file with a size
of 50k would take up 7 clusters, or 56k on your hard disk. So no matter
how small a file size is, it will take up the minimum of 1 cluster.

The is a program called XEQ which permits you to put all small .COM files
into 1 larger file. This cuts down on the number of clusters used. If
you want the file (don't know if it'll work on the T2000), and it's not
in the library, let me know and I'll scrape it up and upload it.

Actually, the 2000 uses 16 sectors per cluster in the disk formatting. Tandy
built the machine with the obvious intention of allowing a full size 32 MB hard
disk because this sizing (and the current length of the FAT table) will allow
just enough clusters to hold the 32MB (which, by the way, 8KB * 4000+ clusters
>= 32MB).

I'm sending Jim a copy of the instructions published earlier in PCM which tell
you how to change the hard disk's allocation to 4KB clusters.

From: HEST To: MISAL & JOCO (NR)

MISAL: In re: "why I want to do this" <read date into a .txt file & back again>.
Right, JOCOL, I do not have a real time clock. I could just type it in. This
came up as I was writing a fairly elaborate AUTOEXEC.BAT file, which gives me
all sorts of options each time I boot as to how I want my system configured (I
can choose to have a RAM disk, the mouse drive, the print spooler & a neat
little phone directory/autodialer, or only some of these, or none.) For those
options which involve device drivers, I've written several config.sys files,
labeled with distinguishing extensions, and play a little shell game with RENAME
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file based on my responses to the queries posed on screen.
Once I've settled on which config.XXX file will be my config.sys file for a
given session, the AUTOEXEC.BAT does a warm reboot, which wipes out whatever
date I've loaded. Now, obviously the simple solution is to make entering the
date the last thing in my AUTO file, and this infact is what I've done. But I
just started wondering, given the nifty redirecting stunts one can do in DOS
with > and >>, why it didn't seem possible to load the date, redirect that
string "Current date is 7-21-88" into a text file, and then isolate simply the
date somehow and read it BACK in when I do the warm reboot. I'm sure you will
understand that once I saw that it seemed impossible, I simply HAD to figure out
how to do it. Curiously, a "rival publication" (PC MAGAZINE, if you must know)
arrived in my mail within a couple of days with a routine concocted by a reader
who wanted to do something similar. However, it only seems to go halfway toward
what I want to do. The reader's AUTO file branches to another batchfile (he
calls it READDATE.BAT) which does in fact redirect the output of the DATE
function to a text file. Then it treats the first word in the string (i.e.,
"CURRENT") as the name of yet a THIRD batch file. When he then calls
CURRENT.BAT, DOS treats the date string (7-21-88 or whatever) as THE 4th
PARAMETER on the "CURRENT.BAT" command line. Neat, huh? I thought so. But I
can't seem to figure out a statement which would take %4 of CURRENT.BAT and put
it in a text file. If I could do that (put %4 in a file called LASTD.ATE, say)
it seems to me I could then have a statement like
DATE<LASTD.ATE which would accomplish my end, entering my date and giving me
a chance to change it if I want to, or leave it alone. It would seem to me that
something like this would be useful for anyone who reboots a lot in a single day
-- though most of those folks probably have an internal clock/calendar. Anyway,
I find it a tantalizing little problem and if you feel like amusing yourselves
with it, I would love to know what you come up with. My knowledge of DOS is
extremely haphazard (I've never owned a current DOS manual and have figured
stuff out mostly from magazines like PCM) so I would not be surprised to learn
that some very simple solution exists. I would be most grateful, in fact, to
learn that some very simple solution exists!!

This note has been composed online, and upon rereading I find I could have been
more clear in expressing myself. If you are befuddled still, please ask for
clarification.

I also lie a lot -- I wrote the initial concept with Horace Ory and he published
it in PCM.

Next message has the text -- It's been a while back since the article was
published in PCM:

Procedure for Using 4 KB Allocation Units

        1) Make a full backup of the contents of the hard disk. Take
the opportunity to do some pruning of files and housekeeping.
Also, note the amount of free space available so that later
the amount of space saved can be calculated.

        2) Using DEBUG, load the first 50H sectors of the hard disk.

             -L DS:0000 2 0 50

The 50H sectors are more than enough to include the boot
        sector, FAT tables, and directory.

        3) Change the sectors per allocation unit from 10H to 08H.

             -E 000D
xxxx.000D 10.08 (you enter the 08 and press return)

        4) Fill the area from 0203H to 71FFH with zeros to delete
the FAT entries and the directory. (The first FAT begins at
0200H, the second FAT begins at 1A00H, and the root directory
begins at 3200H and extends to 71FFH.)

             -F DS:0203 71FF 0

        5) Make sure that the first FAT begins with the entries
        F8FFFF at 0200H.

             -D DS:0200 0202

If the entries at 0200H are not F8FFFF, then enter them.

             -E DS:0200
             xxxx:0200 xx.F8 xx.FF xx.FF

        6) Write the 50H sectors with the changes to the disk.

             -W DS:0000 2 0 50

        7) Reboot from a floppy disk. At this point the revised boot
sector will be read into memory and used, and the second FAT
will be constructed, automatically by MS-DOS.

        8) Still operating from the floppy disk, perform a SYS C:.

        9) Read the backup files onto the hard disk again. Log onto
the hard disk, note the amount of free space available, and
calculate the percentage saved through the use of 4 KB units.

Sorry about the confusion in the two messages.

As you do not have the real-time clock and have to type the date when you first

retrieve it when necessary. Here is an example of how to do this:

ECHO You must specify a filename.
ECHO Please re-enter the command sequence.

  DATE < CR.DAT | FIND "C" > STAMP.!!!

I prepared the message using an editor and them simply used the ASCII upload

but enigmatic. I intend to try it later -- but what is "C" and what is NUL ?
Maybe I will figure it out on my own. Thanks very much!!

Do you know if the new flt simulator works with the old scenery disks? Also,
has anyone used either of the two control control yokes that are being
advertised, one for about $79 (with rudder pedals optional) and the other for
about $125? I'd like to make sure they work okay on the Tandy 1000. I wonder
how a 286 accelerator (express) card would affect operations.

unwanted bk of lower value chips. There is no need to do any hardware

OK to buy an older 1000?
     From: JOANNA To: ALL

I need to get a 1000 or something that is much more fully PC compatible than is
my Tandy 2000.

Today, I looked at a 1000 that the owner claimed to have bought a year and a
half ago. It has only 128K and a CM-4 monitor. It was quite dusty, but seemed to
work fine. It is not an EX,SX, TX or anything -- just the original 1000. It has
just one 5-1/4 drive. He has all of one game to throw in and a pair of deluxe
joysticks. He also has the manuals.

Do you know if that thing is upgradable? He is ASKING $450, but I suppose there
is room to bargain. Is this a ballpark price? Best price I have seen around here
for any 1000.

I know the CM-5 is supposed to be a dog, but is this CM-4 even worse? It seemed
to look fine to me and appeared, on recollection, no better or worse than the
CM-11 I am using at the moment.

The owner says he bought it from Radio Shack, but I doubt they were still
selling original 1000s a year and a half ago.

I am looking for a bargain, but I do want to be able to use ProComm, XtPro, and
a few of the newer programs. I know it will need more memory, which I suppose is
available.

You think a 3-1/2 drive could be put in the extra drive slot?

I forgot to even see if it has an RS-232 port.

What other considerations should I keep in mind? It has those half-size slots,
I guess, but about all I want is a clock board.

Thanks for your help,

    Joan

I am really not sure if the old scenario templates will work with the new F-Sim,
Paul. Your best chance of finding out is to call the developer of F-Sim. It may
save you a lot of headaches.

Keeping in mind that the T1000 is a clone - you can expand any way that the IBM
can. Are you talking strictly memory? Your Subject header and message content
have confused me a little!

     T2K and WP50
     From: BRUCET To: DOSWIZZ

John, First I must thank you for the great little routine "Disk Light" which
I've been using for over a year. After looking at your MODEL 2000 GRAPHICS
programs I downloaded last month, I got up enough nerve to try to write a T2K
graphics driver for WordPerfect 5.0 using the WP driver kit. It consists of some
dummy files (.asm) and a batch routine to run masm, link and exe2bin to make a
custom.wpd (WordPerfect 5.0 graphics driver). The driver needs seven inputs as
follows: A. Max pixels in x (I used 639) B. Max pixels in y (I used 399) C.
Bytes per row (I used 80) D. Video frame buffer seg addr (I used 0e000h) E. Max
colors (I used 8) F. Dots per inch in x (I've tried a range of numbers I'll
explain) G. Dots per inch in y (ditto as above in x)

I can build a driver using MASM 5.1, LINK and EXE2BIN(from 2.11.03 DOS) that
almost seems to work. However the graphics screen is not building a logical
picture. It appears to be trying to build a correct display but the dots
(pixels) don't line up right. It kind of looks like a screen where horizontal
and/or vertical sync are out, but nothing moves like a sync problem. If you hit
cursor arrows to sch scroll the graphics screen, it looks like it is properly
rewriting the display, except it isn't logical (rea (recognizable). If you
adjust the dots per inch numbers in logical ranges (65 to 120) the display is
adjusted, but still not right. The same goes if you change change the max x and
y numbers to numbers like 319 and 199. It's trying to display correctly, but not
quite there. I deduced some of the numbers from examples like your "graph.asm"
program modification. I wonder if you might suggest something? I am experienced
in Z80 assemply language but this is my first try at the T2K. I also can't get
the WP50 version to print. Someone said you have to install a PRN driver instead
of an LPT1 driver, but I haven't figured that one out either. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. Thanks.

     Tan 1000 mem
     From: BRUCET To: BOBTARBURTON

Bob, I am responding because after reading the responses to your question, I see
no one has given a correct answer. First, There is no such thing as a 64K T1000.
Second, the older 128K (on mother board) machines can only be upgraded with
another add on memory board. Third, as to which one to buy, with the worldwide
memory shortage, get whatever you can, but beware, third party boards are being
sold with zero memory. The Tandy 25-1011 mem plus board can be ordered for you
atany RS store through National Parts (a little over $200) but it will only add
256K of memory (take your 128K machine to 384K). A second set of 8 256K chips
will cost an arm and a leg, if y ou can find them ($130 to higher). Hope this
helps.

RE: OK to buy an older 1000? (Re: Msg 12921)
     From: BEACHBUM To: JOANNA

Joan,

I bought one of the original 1000's back in December '85. It that time
the price for everything you mentioned NEW was $990.

The only drawback of the 1000 is the 3 slots. You may not expect to
add anything now, but you will! With the multifunction boards, though, this
is not much of a problem. Instead of the 3.5 inch disk drive, you may want to
consider getting a hard disk....they're a lot better and relatively cheap.

The 1000 does not have a serial connection (RS-232), but it does have
a built in parallel port for a printer.
