     Tandy 1000 memory upgrade
     From: BOBTARBURTON To: ALL

I need to upgrade a T1000 64K computer to at least 256k to run MSWorks.
I have done memory upgrades before on other brands (not compatibles).
Can I just pop the case and install 256K chips in sockets used by the 64K
chips or is desoldering (yuck!) required.
Would it be simpler to install some kind of 3rd party board or TANDY board?
        Thanks

Are you sure that your T1000 only has 64K? I thought the least amount of memory
to come with a 1000 was 128K. Normally, you would remove one bank of 64K chips
and replace them with 256K chips, then move the jumper. This will put you at
384K, on the usual T1000.

Never seen a T1K with 64K memory. What you will need is a memory expansion
board. Check the magazines for prices. You will also need a DMA on the board
for faster access.

Your message was so vague I don't know exactly what you want. Most programs
come with a print driver. Now, if you mean that the program you have doesn't
have a driver for the DMP 110, you may be out of luck. Something like this
would have to be programed by someone. If by some chance you ment print

I think that the only way around the "Shell Game" is to change your video mode

As for a program to restore the screen image after a DOS call - I don't know of

     From: MISAL To: JJJJJ

Make sure that you place the filename of the Script (ASP) next to the proper
choice on your DIALING SCREEN. The DIAL "#" statement in the Script can be
deleted if you are calling the Script from your DIALING SCREEN.

If you invoke the Script file with a macro, then leave the DIAL "#" in the
Script. You must also have this as the "proper" number of the choice "on your
DIALING SCREEN". In other words - if your Delphi choice is number 1 on the
DIALING SCREEN, it must be DIAL "1" in the Script file.

Other than that you MUST use Telenet, be at 1200 bps and use 8 BIT - No parity.

The thing that most users miss is the correlation of the DIALING SCREEN choice
and the DIAL "#" in the script file.

Let me know if this takes care of it.

In the April issue of PCM you explained how to get a color display at the
command level. I followed your instructions on my one year old 1000SX and I
have been enjoying color ever since. My younger brother just bought a new 1000SX
and when I copied my autoexec.bat file to his computer - no color. All we could
get was a prompt which included the metacharacters. His BIOS version is 1.02
and mine is 1.01. Is this the problem, and can it be fixed? Incidently he gets
beautifull color on FastBack and I can not - related problem? Finally, is there
an upper limit on the number of characters you can use in the prompt command? I
had to drop some of my goodies because the system seeme to be truncating the
command. P.S. Keep up the great work! I look forward to your column every
month.

RE: Prompt Command (Re: Msg 12730)
     From: DOSWIZZ To: JJJJJ

Three problems here:

1. Your brother cannot get color with your autoexec file because you also did
not set up the CONFIG.SYS file with the command DRIVER=ANSI.SYS.

2. Color on your machine -- older versions of the Tandy 1000 BIOS cause the
machine to boot up in the 80 x 25 Black/white mode (mode 2) -- try a MODE CO80
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

3. If you are running DOS 3.2 or later on your SX, add the command SHELL=
COMMAND.COM /E:1024 /P to your CONFIG.SYS file and your limitation on prompt
characters should go away -- you are reaching the limit of the normal default
160 byte environment allocated by DOS when you boot up unless you use the SHELL
command in CONFIG.SYS.

Mike, I just uploaded a couple of Tandy 2000 programs to the Tandy-Specific
database over in the PC Compatibles Sig. One is PONG2K.COM, an arcade-style
Pong game for any Tandy 2000 (no graphics option or extra memory needed). The
other is DOSCLR.COM, a color-setting utility for any color-equipped 2000. It's
got menu and command line modes for selecting foreground, background, and
high-intensity attribute colors. This allows up to 4 different colors on the
screen while the machine stays in the fast monochrome text mode. This is
Version 4.1 of DOSCLR. It's a minor update of the program which appeared in the
November '87 PCM. DOSCLR runs under all known Tandy 2000 DOS versions, and
alters the BIOS in memory (not on boot disk) so the chosen colors remain
permanent until a reboot.

     Teac 720KB Drive

     I recently installed a Teac 720kb 3 1/2" drive in my 3000HL identical to
the units supplied as external drives for the EX/HX's. The drive formats and
reads perfectly. After reading a directory from the drive either with DOS's DIR
command or any other program, no matter what disk I place in the drive or even
if the drive is empty, a directory will yield the same files and label as if the
original disk were still in the drive. This occurs irregardless of how the
machine is booted and is localized to the Teac drive. It seems that the problem
has to arise from the drive. Are there jumper settings that may have some
effect? I have toyed with DRIVER.SYS and DRIVPARM and even CACHE with no luck.
It seems as though the drive is retaining the disk's FAT some way. I can avoid
the situation by forcing a disk not ready error by trying to run a program from
the drive while it's empty and the next DIR will be fine but subsequent DIRs
will all be the same no matter what disk is in- stalled in the drive. Does
anyone have any insight to this strange behavior?

I have had model 3, 4, 1000A and if I were going to use Tandy again It would be
a 3000 at least with HD but not Tandy's HD! I am using a Kaypro PC 30 with
Seagate 238 HD , EGA Wonder, EGA monitor 768 K for $1895. I could have gone Mail

At the extreme left of the DIALING screen you must put in the name of the Script
(ASP) file. This is on the same line as the Telenet access number and parity
settings. Assuming that this the first entry on your DIAL screen, then the ASP
file must say DIAL 1.

AS for the macro keys, just type ALT-Z and get the menu. Go to the macro choice
and you should be able to figure it out (with a little playing).

I need to track down a rumor. I have heard that, as of MS-DOS 3.3, IBM has
assumed maintenance of DOS, first as PC-DOS, of course, but also delivered to
MicroSoft for them to market as MS-DOS. I can't find the source (or for that
matter, any reference at all). It sounds reasonable, but I'm getting the "poo-

RE: Prompt Command (Re: Msg 12741)
     From: CAMPER To: JJJJJ

On the color thing.. are you trying nu (yep, in color) imediately AFTER you do
the MODE CO80? These two programs, as well as many others, use the default color
mode. If another program is run that changes it, then programs set for default
screen mode will use that mode.
For a test, try this. Make it using debug:
    form dos prompt:
        DEBUG <cr>
          A 100 <cr>
              MOV AH,0F <cr>
              INT 10 <cr>
              MOV DL,AL <cr>
              ADD AL,40 <cr>
              MOV DL,AL <cr>
              MOV AH,02 <cr>
              INT 21 <cr>
              INT 20 <cr>
              <cr>
          NCRTMODE.COM<cr>
          R CX <cr>
          16 <cr>
          W<cr>
          q <cr>

Now, when you call this from DOS, type CRTMODE. It will give you the screen
mode you are in:
       @= 40x25 b/w
       A= 40x25 color
       B= 80x25 b/w
C= 80x25 color (what you normally should see after a Mode CO80).

Run this after you do the mode co80, and before you run Fastback or NU. If you
get the bw modes, then what did you run before that changed the mode? Run it
after everything to find out.

     RE: DMP130PR.ARC (Re: Msg 12762)
     From: JIMREED To: ALICATE

  Bob,

Your words about "entering group to get back here" . . .

. . . suggest to me that you are leaving this SIG to go to workspace. That is
NOT the way to do it. You can reach workspace by typing WO at the PC SIG>
  prompt.

Workspace, like Mail, can be reached from most anyplace on Delphi. I tend to
think of Workspace as the "second floor" and of Mail as being in the
"basement" and you can "climb up" into Workspace from anywhere, or you can
"drop down" into Mail from most anywhere.

To submit a file to a database, you should go to that SIG and enter workspace
from there! Otherwise, Delphi does not know which database you want to submit
  to.

Want to read how to submit a file? (Y/N)

AS FAR AS SUBMITTING A FILE:

This process prepares the files you have uploaded to
DELPHI for inclusion in the database of the SIG. You are
going to go through a number of steps that will put the
finishing touches on your file. No files are included in the
SIG databases until after they are reviewed by the SIG
Manager or an Assistant or SYSOP. The information you are
going to attach to your file during the submission process
will provide them and the other users with the information
necessary to determine the value of your submission and how
it should work and what it should do. ONLY files in your
           Workspace may be submitted.

           To submit a file:

                1. At the Workspace prompt enter "SUBMIT" or SUB
                2. The system will remind you that the file(s) to be
submitted must be in your Workspace. Pressing the
RETURN or ENTER key is equal to answering "yes".
                3. The system will then ask you for the number of files
you will be submitting. Enter 1 (one) unless it is
a group of files that should stay together because
of content. If you are submitting a Group, see the
section on "GROUP FILES" at the end of this section.
                4. You will then be asked to identify the type of file
that you are submitting. Since the list of file
types is displayed just above the question, it
should be easy. PLEASE be sure to choose one of the
types from the list. Be careful but, don't be too
concerned. The reviewer can change your selection
                    if necessary.
                5. You will then be asked to enter the Topic that the
file should be assigned to. If you don't remember
all of the Topic names, you can enter a "?" to get a
listing displayed. Enter one of the Topics from the
list. The system will not accept anything else -
just in case you were wondering. It is also
programmed not to accept the "?" or a null.
                6. You will then be asked to provide a short
description of your file. Make it clear and simple
so that both the reviewer and the other users will
be able to appreciate the value of your
contribution. Enter CTRL/Z to save your work or
                    CTRL/C to begin again.
                7. You will then be asked for a Keyword. Entering the
"?" will again cause the system to display a listing
of primary Keywords for the Topic you have selected.
PLEASE be sure to use one of the listed Keywords.
                8. You will then be asked to add any additional
Keywords that might be useful. Such things as the
Operating System version needed, any special cards
or other additions, etc make good keywords. Words
that describe what your file does or where it is
                    useful also make good keywords.
                9. You will then be asked for the Workspace name of
your file. If you do not enter it exactly as it is
listed in your Workspace, the system will not accept
it. It will give you as many chances as you need to
                    get the name right.
               10. You will then be asked for the Download name of your
file. This is the name that a user will enter to
request the transfer of your file. I must be
consistant with the capacity of the receiving
system. Try to keep it as plain as possible.
               11. You will then be asked for the Display name of your
file. This is the name that acts as a title to the
description of your submission. You have 32
characters, including spaces, for this name. Use as
many as you need to make it clear.
               12. You will then be asked if you want your file deleted
from your Workspace. Unless you have a special need
to keep it, answer "y". Your Workspace has only a
limited free storage capacity (about 25K bytes).
This completes the submission process for a single
                    file.

           GROUP FILES:

Submitting a number of files as a Group is similar to
the single file submission process. A Group provides a means
of keeping files for ease of transfer and to be sure that the
user downloading them gets the complete set.

           GROUP SUBMISSIONS:

3G. You will enter a number greater than 1 (one)
9G. You will be asked the Workspace file name, Download
name and Display name for each of the files in the
Group. This should be the same number that was
entered in step 3G. The system is dumb, it insists
that those two numbers match. After each entry of
a Display name you will be asked if you want the
Workspace file deleted. After the last Display
name is entered and the last Workspace file is
deleted, you will have completed the Group
submission process. The system will thank you and
                     We thank you.

It is not necessary to leave the SIG in order to enter your Workspace. If you
are returning to the Main Delphi menu, you needn't. Workspace and Mail are
"Delphi-wide". As you know, your Mail area is private. So is your Workspace. I
cannot enter your personal, private Worskspace to delete the DMP130PR.ARC file.

The problem you are having is due to the fact that you are trying to submit to
the Main Delphi account. If you remain "inside" the PC-Compatibles SIG, then
your SUBMIT will work properly and be sent to the Tandy/PC-Compatibles account
(this is our area/storage unit).

I see that Jim Reed has left you the whole reference to SUBMIT, so I will not
repeat that. Let me know how this works out.

To move it to the Tandy Sig, you must SUBMIT it to the PC Compatibles.

The Tandy Sig's databases are in the PC Comp. area. Just follow the prompts and
your program will be reviewed by Hollie, Mike or myself. If all is ok, it will
be put in the open area for all users to download. Your workspace, is just
that, YOURS. We can't get to it, you must take care of it. When you submit the
program, leave a description of what it does, this makes our job easier.

  Oh my, Bob,

It's sounds as if you are still . . .

. . . having trouble understanding workspace. There is only ONE workspace, but
it makes a difference WHAT DOOR you enter from -- if I might explain it in
  that fashion.

You should not have deleted that file as it is in YOUR workspace, no matter
what door or window you climb in through.

That is why I tried to explain my "cognitive map" of Delphi as having
everything on the first floor, except Mail, which I conceptualize as being in
the basement, and Workspace, which I like to think of as being on the second
floor (sort of a private upstairs den, if you will).

Workspace takes up the entire second floor, just as Mail takes up the entire
  basement.

Now. If you want to submit something to the Kitchen, then you have to enter
Workspace from the kitchen (a hatch in the ceiling, sort of).

But, if you want to submit something to another room (SIG) then you have to
enter Workspace from THAT room. I am sort of comparing the PC SIG to the
  kitchen of a house.

You can "drop down" into Mail from lots of places, but once you get to Mail,
it is the same place -- it just has lots of doorways. The same holds true with
Workspace: Once you get into YOUR workspace (which only YOU can enter), it is
the one and only workspace for you, BUT, if you need to need to drop some
stuff (submit) into the Kitchen, then you must go to the kitchen to use THAT
doorway into the second floor Workspace area -- even though you could have
gone in many other doorways (or broken through the roof <grin>).

I am afraid I may be overexplaining this, but I do think my cognitive map
helps lend some sense of "where am I" assistance.

Yep. You have to reinstall Fastback, or at least that is needed with fastback
plus. FB Does not use default color mode each time it loads, only the default
that was in effect when the program was installed. So, make sure you are in
color mode, and then go through the setup again. If you are in advanced mode in
FB plus, you can do this color setup thru one of the option menus.

     From: DOSWIZZ To: REIMS

Actually, Chris, it's really easy to get most of the programs that were written
for an IBM PC to run on the Tandy 2000 in BASIC. You will need the newest DOS
release 02.11.03 with the new version 02 of the BASIC interpreter and then most
programs should run fine. If they want to run in black and white (mono) mode,
you have to perform a SHELL "MODE BW80" in the BASIC program to kick it into the
proper screen mode.

Tandy 1000 programs are a real "@#($#@(" to convert because of the special
graphics modes.

From what you are telling me, Phil it sounds like an electrical connection in
your computer has gone bad - or when R.S. did the upgrade, they messed it up. I
would think that your problem lies in one of two places. Either in chip U18
(74LS244) or U19 (LM339)- or the surrounding circuitry.

When the BIOS upgrade is performed, resistors are sometimes jumped or cut. These
resistors are on the 5 volt line - so is your Joystick circuitry. I am not
saying that R.S. messed it, as it is impossible for me to tell from here -
BUT I would ask them to check it!

DOS 3.2 and 3.3 both have DRIVER.SYS, Steve. This is an actual DOS file that
must be available to DOS when it boots. If DOS cannot find the file at boot,
then of course, it will not work.

To set up for a 720K disk drive as DOS 3.3 drive A:, you would issue this
command from CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:0/F:2

change pin 34 must be connected. Unfortunately, the Toshiba is the only drive I
have any experience with. If yours is another brand, you might try contacting
the company about the problem. The Toshiba literature on the subject is sparse,
but I have found that 34 must be connected for an AT type computer. It seems to
make no difference to an XT type at all.

they don't advertise in PCM. Back to the point. I had a disk drive from them
that went bad several days after the warranty expired. They replaced it with no
argument and replaced it very quickly at that. I was impressed. They do not
have a hardcard for the 1000 but they do have some standard hard disks that work

     From: MISAL To: ALL

As promised, I will post what has been released about the new DOS version 4.0.
The official release will be July 19th of this month. This is the latest:

1> The 32 meg hard drive barrier will no longer be a barrier. Hard drive
partitions may now be as large a 512 meg.

2> XMA drivers (extended memory drivers) will allow the user graphic interface
to be stored in extended memory instead of main memory. The graphic interface
is part of DOS 4.0.

3> Extended memory will be supported (yeah!).

4> Included is a "built in file management system".

That is the latest on the new DOS. Some handy enhacnements.

Whoops - had your reply mixed with another, Steve. You still need to tell DOS
about the 720K drive with DRIVER.SYS but add the /C option to the end of the
CONFIG.SYS string.

Adding the /C to DRIVER.SYS acts the same as if the drive door had been opened,
causing the buffer to flush for that device. It appears that your system/drive
supports "diskette changeline" -so, use the /C to flush the buffer.

Incidentally, if you had used less buffers in your BUFFERS= statement, you would
not have had the problem - but, if you use less you may not be able to run some
of your software!
