  Jim,

A friend of mine just bought Turbo Tax . . .

. . . for his 1000 TX and I asked him if it would work on a 2000 and he said
no. So, I plan to do my taxes at his house. He says he even has 1040 forms on
tractor feed paper. It came with package.

There are several good tax programs in the database in PC SIG.

You ought to check out the shareware stuff; some is surprisingly good.

I am a T2K owner and it does get frustrating when some of the best stuff, such
as PROCOMM, will not work on the 2000.

Jim, you'll love Turbo Tax. It has everything and is very easy to use. It comes
like you say, with tractor feed forms or, you can print your own if you have a
dot matrix printer. It's neat to see that thing print one up. Every detail of
the form is produced. The fonts are changing almost every 5 seconds. Neat, neat

Excuse me for jumping in, but the 1.2 Meg. drives need a controller that will
handle that format. The controller in the T1000 and other 8088 based machines
cannot handle that drive. Some companies are now comming out with a combination
HD/FD controller for these machines, but I'm not sure if they will work in the
Tandy because of the built in controller.

     From: WALKERM To: GILLIE

If you are using dos 3.2 you shouldn't use hformat.com.

The hard disk utilities that come with the hard disk card are not right for 3.2.

Use hsect to hard format the card then use fdisk to partition the card, then
finally use format to soft format the card. use format/s to make the drive
bootable. You can also use mlpart to partition the drive if you want to.

See Appendix D in the Dos 3.2 manual for the full poop.

I bought PC Tools Deluxe recently and have found several of the modules to be

very friendly. The hard disk optimizer is also excellent. Since I have XTREE,
I don't use the DOS shell or file commands, nor have I had to use the file
recovery routines, but they look useful. No problems at all yet on my 1000A,
and the system info routine shows that my Exec PC Sprint board is running at
160% of standard speed. Recommended, and you'll never use the DOS backup or

Roger,
I am also a fan of PC Tools Deluxe. I have found the wordprocessor, although
limited, very useful in writing batch files, source code, and just plain short
messages. Very handy to have at just a HOT KEY away. Also, I have found, the
format command is more forgiving than the DOS format. A friend of mine, tried
to format 360K disks on his "AT" compatable. Every time he gave the disks to
someone with a "XT" they got a error message to the effect the disk was not
formatted. I suggested he try PC Tools to format the disk at 360K and now he
dosn't have any problem exchanging disks.
I have also tried other backup programs and found PC Tools backup and restore
programs to be on par with the rest. The disk management section is the bread
and butter of the program. They are the best I have seen. Xtree fans may dis-
agree but I just don't care for the user innerface in Xtree. As far as a "ZAP"
program, again, I hold PC Tools on a pedestal. The search function is GREAT,
Mike, Hollie and I use it all the time for checking programs in the database, to
make sure they are public domain. The disk optimizer is a little slow and I use
another program for that function.

I don't know about the total set of advantages/disadvantages yet. It depends on
too much: for example, how compatible is the board with the standard IBM
compatible architecture. Or, how much software dollars do you currently have
tied up in T2000 that you do not want to reinvest in the compatible world. We
will have to wait and see the finished product before I can make any definitive

system (SYS.COM). The company worked with me but could not get the problem
resolved. They shipped a second drive which also failed. It seems this one would
not format.
MEGAHAUS seemed to think I had a problem with my machine. So I carried it
down to the local RS Service Center and had them look at it. They could not get
either drive to work properly either (or is it neither). But they did stick one
of thier 20MB drives in it and it formated and operated perfectly. MEGA- HAUS
was lost for any explaination. They did take the drives back.
Now, I'm looking again. Who out there has a 30MB hard card or hard drive that
works on a 1000 [not an A, EX, SX nor TX]? Where did you get it and did you have
any problems with it.
                                                      Thank you,

Just a query please. I have been using Lotus 123 for a couple of years on my
T2K and I would dearly love to change the color scheme. In framework I use a
red background with white lettering and I would love to transfer that same
scheme to my Lotus 123 program. If anyone knows of a patch, or where one might
have been published I would be most grateful for that information. Again this is
for the Tandy 2000, so generic patches might not work. thnx jproctor

OK, if your version is similar to the IBM version, I think I can help.

Put on you DEBUGGING CAP, reach for your copy of DEBUG and a spare disk and lets
go.

FIRST, make a backup of the setup file (LOTUS.SET in version 1A.) Now put DEBUG
on the same disk or in the DOS PATH. Load the file (LOTUS.SET) into DEBUG by
doing the following:
DEBUG B:LOTUS.SET if you have 2 drives and LOTUS.SET in drive B: Now
SEARCH the file for the default colors.
 - s 100 aaaa 07 30 0A 3F <cr> (the <cr> is the return key) DEBUG will
respond with an address such as 0ad6:19ed WRITE down the last 4 characters TYPE
E XXXX:XXXX <cr> where the XXXX:XXXX is the address DEBUG gave you DEBUG will
now give you the value stored at that address(the first color). To change that
color type in the value of the combination you want (see chart below). Now hit
the space bar and DEBUG will give you the next value. Continue until you change
all the colors you want (only four combinations in LOTUS as shown by the 07 30
0A 3F in the beginning). When you are done changing colors, hit the ENTER key
and you will have the hyphen prompt again. Now hit the W key and hit ENTER to
write the file back to disk. When you are done hit the Q key and Enter again
to quit DEBUG. Next time you start LOTUS you should have the colors you want.
GOOD LUCK

This chart is for cursor and background colors:
  0 - BLACK 8 - GRAY
  1 - BLUE 9 - DARK BLUE
  2 - GREEN A - BRIGHT GREEN
  3 - LIGHT BLUE B - BRIGHT BLUE
  4 - RED C - BRIGHT RED
  5 - PURPLE D - BRIGHT PURPLE
  6 - BROWN E - YELLOW
  7 - WHITE F - BRIGHT WHITE

The combination 1F makes a BLUE background with BRIGHT WHITE letters.
  Always background,foreground (1- background,F-foreground).

You can use a batch file constructed with _____EDLIN_____, not the COPY CON
trick. Here's an example to put my Okidata printer in the Emphasized Text Mode
in 10 CPI (the character codes are ESC G). Execute EDLIN and insert lines using
the I command -- name the file EMP.BAT for want of a better name:

ECHO OFF
ECHO ^V[G >PRN

You type the second line in EDLIN by pressing the Ctrl-V key and then the key
you want to send as a Control Character. In this Ctrl-[ = Escape code (0x1b).
Save the file by exiting from EDLIN and type EMP to shift the printer to
emphasized text mode. Let your imagination be your guide -- sorry but I have no
experience with a DMP-130 and you will have to figure out all of the appropriate
codes.

Another alternative is to use DEBUG to create the file as follows for the same
example:

DEBUG
-e 100
xxxx:0100 yy 1B zz 47<return>
-rcx
xxxx 2
-n EMP.TXT
-w
Writing 0002 bytes
-q

and then use the file created (EMP.TXT) by performing a COPY EMP.TXT PRN
command.

Hope this helps -- read my column in PCM

Jeez, I'm just full of DEBUG tricks tonight!!!

On your LOUSY 1-2-3 disk you will find a file called TD.DRV. Load it by typing
the command DEBUG TD.DRV and examine the four bytes beginning at offset address
018D. These bytes are respectively 018D - normal background color, 018E -
normal foreground color, 018F - highlight background color, and 0190 - highlight
foreground color. These colors can be any one of 16 choices:

0 - black8 - black
1 - blue9 - brite blue
2 - green10- brite green
3 - cyan11- brite cyan
4 - red12- brite red
5 - magenta13- brite magenta
6 - yellow14- brite yellow
7 - white15- brite white

Examine them with a DEBUG command of "E 018d" and you can change the bytes as
you go. Don't forget to write TD.DRV back to the disk when you are done using
the DEBUG "w" command.

If you are really enthusiastic and want to play with the actual attributes, they
are located just where they are on the IBM Versions of LJUNK 1-2-3. Examine the
locations beginning at 017D and you will see something like 08 48 88 C8. These
mean respectively normal vide0, highlite video, reverse video, and highlite
reverse video.

Have fun!

     Tandy acquires GRiD Systems Corporation
     From: EDITORS To: ALL

TANDY CORPORATION ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION AGREEMENT WITH GRID SYSTEMS CORPORATION

DALLAS -- Tandy Corporation and GRiD Systems Corporation have signed a definite
agreement for the acquisition of GRiD Systems, which will become a wholly owned
subsidiary of Tandy. The acquisition agreement was announced today at Infomart
by John V. Roach, chairman and chief executive officer of Tandy Corporation, and
Samuel J. Wiegand, chairman and chief executive officer of GRiD Systems
Corporation. Tandy's Roach said, "This new division will enhance our product
development capability in laptop computers, open new opportunities in the
government market, and provide an alternative marketing channel to the corporate
user. At the same time, GRiD, which will continue to market under its current
name, will benefit from our materials sourcing, nationwide service, increased
breadth of product offering, and from our financial strength."

Wiegand stated, "Our association with Tandy gives us new resources to serve the
existing customer better. Additionally, as the laptop portable market begins to
develop at a higher rate, it provides us new strength to meet the competition."

Tandy Corporation is a leading provider of personal computers for the consumer
and business markets. GRiD Systems Corporation designs, manufactures and
markets exceptionally high quality, magnesium-cased portable microcomputers to
the field automation market.

GRiD Systems Corporation is headquartered in Fremont, California, and has
national sales offices in major U.S. cities, as well as in Canada and Europe.
Wiegand will continue as chief executive officer of GRiD Systems.

The aggregate purchase price will be paid in Tandy Corporation common stock,
with the initial payment having an approximate net cost of $55 million or $2 per
share of GRiD Systems common stock equivalent. If earn-out milestones are
achieved, an additional payment having an approximate net cost of $32.5 million
in shares could be issued over the periods ending December 31, 1990. Tandy will
treat this acquisition as a purchase.

would not be a patch, but in the forthcoming bug fix release.
I hate that one, also. Supposedly it worked when the debug statements were

the debug flags, all hell broke loose. Doesn't suprise me when it wasn't tested

The key to having a Main Menu and Sub Menus under John's MENU 4.0 is really
easy. What I did was Make Directory MENU1 and MENU2. Keeping in mind that my
MAIN MENU was in the root directory of C:. In there, I had the files MENU.EXE
and MENU4-0.MNU (the data file).

I then copied MENU.EXE and MENU4-0.MNU to both the directory of MENU1 and MENU2.
Changing to the directory of MENU1, I RENAMED MENU.EXE to MENU1.EXE and in the
directory of MENU2, RENAMED MENU.EXE to MENU2.EXE.

Now when I set up choice A and B in the MAIN MENU (root directory) I simply had
them invoke MENU1.EXE in directory of C:\MENU1 and MENU2.EXE in the directory of
C:\MENU2.

To go back to the MAIN MENU (root directory), I simply made choice A in each
call MENU.EXE in the directory of C:\.

This way I had 26 choices in the MAIN MENU, 26 choices in MENU1 and 26 in MENU2!

memory (one for each change of menus). At 34k a copy, it wouldn't take long to
pack the ol' 2K to the gills. I started the main menu, went to the sub, picked
the main from the sub, went back to the sub, then back up to the main. Then I
ran MAPMEM and found 5 copies of MENU resident. Miraculously, pressing ALT-F1 5
times at that point got 'em all out with no problem. I suspect later versions
of MENU would work the same way. Hasn't this been a problem for you?

Thanks Doug for the comments -- tell Martin Marietta that they better hurry
because until the first of the month, I can easily be "had" by any DoD
contractor as I cannot accept money from them. After the first, well, they are
then on their own as I am no longer in the government service and will have
retired from active duty.

The Alt-F1 key stroke will terminate the MENU program completely. If it is the
first level, the program terminates and you are left at a DOS prompt.

If you are running a secondary or higher level menu, pressing Alt-F1 will
terminate that level and return to the next higher level. There are no
keystrokes other than Alt-F1 that the program will recognize and it would be
worth more effort than I can imagine to attempt to coerce one of the
alphabetical keystrokes to allow itself to function as an exit key.

Besides, I wanted that to be a consicience act instead of an accident and
pressing the Alt-F1 key to terminate causes that one extra step that makes you
think about it.

One thing possibly for Version 4.1 is to make MENU recognize the second or
higher level state and make the exit back to the next higher level some easier
keystroke -- without a password. Still would need a password to exit to DOS or
SETUP or exit to the SYSTEM level.

ARRRRGGGGG!

That means that you have many copies of the MENU.EXE file floating around on
your hard disk. Here's how I set up multiple level menus:

Remember, MENU is intelligent and will run from anywhere in the path including
locating the MSETUP program and the ".MNU" files. So, I have MENU.EXE,
MSETUP.EXE, and my ".MNU" files in the subdirectory \DOS\BIN which is part of my
PATH statement.

the primary level MENU file is the default MENU4-0.MNU and resides in \DOS\BIN
where MENU sucks it right up -- MENU is the last command in my AUTOEXEC file. To
create a second level menu for, say games, I enter MSETUP (Alt-F2) in the
primary level and select the key option I want to run the second level menu.
Assign the Key Title as you desire, the program to run is STILL ___MENU.EXE___,
and the directory to run is as you desire. On the COMMAND PARAMETERS line, type
in the full name of the .MNU file, including the path name as in \GAMES.MNU and
finish the install for this menu option.

Press the key to invoke the menu option for the second level and you are
presented with the default menu choices when MENU cannot locate the file (\DOS
\BIN\GAMES.MNU). Use Alt-F2 (MSETUP) to change this option list as you desire
and then press F2 to save it. It will be written to the disk just as you
specified in the original level's setup file. Press Alt-F1 to terminate this
second level and return to the original level -- pressing the key option again
should locate and run MENU with the new option list you just saved.

There is absolutely no reason to have more than one copy of MENU.EXE and
MSETUP.EXE on your disk -- you then only need a setup file for each option level
that you want to install and each of these .MNU files take up at most two
clusters or approximately 4,000 bytes as opposed to 24K to 26K apiece for
MENU.EXE and MSETUP.EXE.

     bios problems
     From: GILLIE To: ALL

Hello everyone, just received the new bios chip for my t1000, only problem is it
don't work !, my machine is an early model (serial is in the 3000's) and it has
the two chip bios set, i read from some of the messages in this forum that i
would have to change a jumper (R1 and R2), tryed that, but still didn,t work,
the new chip was in U9 by the way, also heared that i needed a new PAL chip.

Any help in getting this problem solved would be great.

Yes, i know, you have to do two things to get a one chip bios to work in a two
chip machine, 1 you have to change a jumper at R2 to R1, 2 change a PAL chip so
it selects one chip instead of two, because on powerup the 8088 jumps almost to
the end of the bios, there it finds a jump to the front of the bios which
happens to be in the other chip so with only one chip installed the 8088 is
jumping to the other chip on power up then jumps into a location where there is
no chip, the next thing that happens is CRASH !.

Mode BW80 will cure the color problems at LOTUS 1-2-3 exit. Tandy rather

As MISAL said, go to the PC Compatibles SIG and enter the DAtabase TAndy (DA TA)
then READ DATE FIXES FOR MODEL-III/4 which will display the information your
original message referred back to and present you with a download menu to select
from. I assume you have a Model-4/4d/4p and you also have LDOS 5.1.4 -- if so,
you will want to download the two $/CMD files and the two $/LBR files for your
system as each contains patches for their respective operating system.
Actually, you will need only one of the CMD files because you can unpack both of
the LBR files using the same DOS version. Follow the written directions
carefully.

This also assumes that you have a communications program for the Model-4 other
than LCOMM/CMD (LDOS 5.1.4) or COMM/CMD (TRSDOS 6.2)?!! You need a binary
protocol such as XMODEM to download the files. If you can't get a procotol
program to perform the download with, send me a blank disk in a mailer with the
correct address labels and return postage to the following address:

causes the graphic demo program coming with the package not to work because the
program uses the return value to check if the computer can accept a particular

always false, the function can set the video mode and the program can use that
mode to do some graphics. Is it a bug or a pecularity of the Tandy 1000 (TX)?

DIGI-MOUSE was in stock at National Parts, and will be in my hands within

two weeks. Many hours and many phone calls to various tandy computer centers

were spent trying to find a mouse that would replace the discontinued tandy

unit.

Its a shame to let the Logitech set on the shelf, surely theres a

driver that will work with it , or a 'patch' to let the logitech or

microsoft driver see the L7 mouse on Com1.

Not being an assembly language programmer , I have no idea whats

required or if its even possible to make a driver that would work. The only

clue that I have is, that, trying to configure a comm program I have for my

T1k I got an error that said , " LOGICAL DEVICE COM1 IS PHYSICAL DEVICE

COM2 , PLEASE RECONFIGURE FOR COM2 AND RESTART THE PROGRAM " . When I did

this the program crashed , just like almost all the other programs I have

that access the serial port.

With the new bios level associated with DOS 2.11.03 there must be a

way ???? (pretty optimistic huh .)

As I was reading Peter Nortons 'Programmers Guide to the IBM PC' I came
across an interesting bit of information , It seems the the PCjr. uses special
circuitry , the VGA (video gate array) to make it appear as though the PCjr's
display memory is l ocated at the 'Color/Graphics Adapter's B800 address.All
references to the B800 area are rerouted to whatever address is actually in use
as display memory. The PCjr can use any part of the first 128k of ram for video
memory, the VGA keeps track of the actua l location. Because of this the PCjr
should be treated like a PC with a CGA card with display memory beginning at
B800.

Now I'm no programmer , but it sounds like theres some similarity in how
the PCjr, and the 2000 use different video memory locations,The 2000 according
to the actual memory installed and the PCjr according to ???

My question is this , is it possible to emulate the PCjr's VGA circuitry
in software , Intercepting all references to the std PC's CGA address and
pointing them to the actual address used by the T2000 ? If so this would let
many programs run on the
2000 that write directly to video

memory.

I'm sure I've oversimplified but, my understanding is that the 2000, in
t~rext mode uses the same scheme to store the 4k of video information, only the
location is different.

        Any Thoughts ?

the RS Dealer upgraded the DOS to TRSDOS 6.2. LDOS is not a Radio Shack product
(yeah, yeah, I know they distributed 5.1.3 as the Hard Disk Operating System
before you other readers jump on me). LDOS can be ordered from MISOSYS, Inc. in
Sterling, VA. MISOSYS now sells a complete upgrade pacakge for LDOS and sells
LS-DOS both with date changes in them. TRSDOS 6.3 is a product of Logical
Systems, Inc.

Before upgrading to 6.3, I chose to try the date patches out -- they worked fine
and meet my needs. Be advised that the upgrade package from Logical Systems
claims to have a single machine detection scheme and will supposedly wipe disks
if it finds it is running on more than one machine. I don't like protection of
any kind and WILL NOT BUY IT.

John

P.S. The Model-4 with 512K of memory and a 15MB hard disk running LDOS, TRSDOS
and CP/M with a speeded up Z-80 compatible processor almost rivals the Tandy
1000TX in power. Quite a machine.

RE: T2000 VIDEO COMPATIBILTY (Re: Msg 12381)
     From: DOSWIZZ To: GLH

First of all, the Tandy 1000 and the PCjr are the equivalent concepts. The
Tandy 1000 video hardware mimics the capabilitis of the PCjr to a "T"

Tandy 2000 is an enigma. The text mode sort of emulates the IBM PC computers by
storing the screen 80 X 25 information in character/attribute format. The
character codes are identical but the attributes are all different. For
example, the character "A" would be written in normal intensity normal video on
a PC by storing the word 41 07 in video memory where the attribute (07) tells
the computer video chip to use normal intensity foreground on a black background
(all references are to monochrome mode). On the Tandy 2000, the word would be
41 0A where the attribute (0A) tells the CRT-9007 video controller the same
information. The eight bits are used totally differently.

Now for the color modes -- unlike the IBM-PC, the Tandy 2000 really has no color
text mode (mode 3, 80 x 25). All operations in the color mode on the Tandy
2000, be they either graphics or text writing, are performed in the full
bit-mapped graphics mode. Where a white "A" on a blue background would be
stored as a 41 1F on an IBM PC, the task on the Tandy 2000 requires far more
detail.

You have to store the data from the 16 bytes composing each scan line of the
character "A" accessed from the data table beginning at F800:0000 in each of the
three graphic planes according to the colors specified. For example, no bit in
the character matrix means that you have to set the bits for the background
color in each of the three planes, whereas, a one bit in the character matrix
means that you have to set the colors for the foreground palette selection.

Now, trapping this in hardware would be easy if the computer CPU and associated
hardware chips supported memory protection/exception schemes as does the 80386.
The CPU chips would also necessarily have to support an I/O Privilege Level
(IOPL) exception as does the 80386 to also trap the errant IN and OUT
instructions to the various ports. Of course, this would require that the
machine be run in the full Virtual 8086 or 80386 modes to support these
privilege levels and you would need an additional (at least) 32 KB of memory to
map into the address space to simulate the graphics store for the emulated
computer video capabilities (gotta be able to read back the data, right).

Now, doing it in software ???? Think the IBM-PC at 4.77MHz is slow!!!

Mike I downloaded Procomm 2.4.2 and was unable to retrieve the doc file. It was
in ACHII. I downloaded the doc file again, to be sure that I had done nothing
wrong, and it is still in ACHII. What do I do to get it into TEXT> I have never
come onto a doc file that was not in TEXT. Regards Earl

To each his own.
If LS-DOS has a protection scheme (Yeah, I know, they claim they do), it has
never been known to hit anyone. I borrowed a Model 4P for a month while my own
machine was down, no problems. If a threat was enough to scare you off, sobeit.
The LS-DOS package is worth the $40, IMHO.

Well, to be perfectly honest about it -- it really was a consideration of cost
versus utility. For as much as I use Radio Shack's native mode, the date
patches are fine. I cannot remember the last time I actually booted a copy of
TRSDOS or LDOS or anything else familiar. The little beastie lives most of its
time in the CP/M world with the overwhelming software base and all good kinds of
tools.

I use CP/M once in a while. I refuse to believe that a DOS with only five
built-in commands is comprehensive enough to use constructively. Frankly, if I
only used it as much as that, I would have just said "system (date=no)",
SYSGENned it, and used the date about as much as you do in CP/M (e.g., not at
all)

I assume that by ACHII you mean ASCII, Earl? If so ASCII is text that will print
out on your printer. I am a little confused as to whether the unpacking (
dearcing) process failed or you just can't print the docs. Help me out here,
please.

Mike, I have since found out that the DOC file for Procom 2,4,2 is in BINARY

seems to be quiet. Are folks going to the PC SIG ?

RE: Fix Dates on Model-III/4 (Re: Msg 12388)

The trade-off is that CP/M does everything that LDOS does from a programmer's
point of view and I don't have to pay the penalty of loading library files from
SYS6/SYS or SYS7/SYS (and SYS8/SYS in TRSDOS) not to mention having to load
SYS1, 2, 3, 4 and others for normal command processing. Tell LDOS to open a
file and watch the gyrations -- tell CP/M to open it and watch the difference in
speed and I get more available memory with CP/M.

Now consider the overwhelming software base for CP/M -- where's the comparison
for TRSDOS/LDOS? I may compare AllWrite with WordStar but don't try to seel me
on the comparison of ProFile (double YEEECCCCCH) to dBASE-II. Where is Turbo
Pascal and a good C compiler (yeah, I know MISOSYS has MC and MRAS but they have
not been around as long as Aztec C. Furthermore, BASCOM, FORTRAN compilers had
to be really "kludged" to run under LDOS/TRSDOS. Where is OutThink and KAMAS
for TRSDOS? Did you say Alcor C?? I would not run that in my dishwasher -- a
good set of $200 coffee cup holders.

You mentioned built-in commands -- well, LDOS and TRSDOS have NONE!!!!! All
commands are really stand-alone programs that are contained in a partitioned
data set called the SYS6, 7, 8 files on your disk. In fact, if you have one of
the copies of Roy Soltoff's PDS manager, you can actually extract these programs
and run them as stand-alone /CMD files. Unlike TRSDOS/LDOS, CP/M's extrinsic
commands are supplied as separate command files where you can delete what you
want while retaining useful ones as opposed to deleting the library files and
removing all of the commands it contains.

If you don't believe there is a vast difference in overall speed of operation,
I have a copy of WordStar ported to run under LDOS. DOG, YECH, SPPPPT! under
CP/M, it is a good three or four times faster.

On my system, all the /SYS files are in a RAMDisk, anyway, so the speed
difference is virtually nil. I have never used either dBase or Profile (any
version). However, I refuse to speak ill of the dead, so my actual opinion of
the Model 4 as a usable computer and of Tandy as a computer vendor will remain
unsaid.

Suffice it so say,, however, for what I want *my* computer to do, LS-DOS is
just fine.
