map with the hard drive and I keep getting sector read errors. I have tried

John, I've been derelict in passing along the thanks of George Del Monte and
myself for your release of MENU to our illustrious aerospace employer. George
read your note to the legal eagle (no, make that beagle). He said it was fine
and to give him a call if MIS gave us any doo-doo. MENU is now up and running
on the Equipment Engineering department's AT and the Facility Information
System's PC. A copy is also on its way through the elephantine bureaucratic
labyrinth, hopefully headed toward an official seal of approval for use
throughout Manned Space Systems.
Thanks again, John. How do your civvies fit?

PFS First Publisher requires 512K memory to run on an IBM compatable. I think
the problem you are having is the T1K uses part of base memory for the screen.
On an IBM compatable, the video card contains the screen memory and all of the
base memory is available for DOS and the program. If you upgrade to 640K, you
should not have any more problems. I know of two people who are using the
program on T1K's without any problems.

Caching is possible with the RAMdisk config, above.

Out of curiosity - the protected program, you are trying to run on the LT; did
it come on a 5.25 diskette? (Can't place some 5.25 protection schemes on a 3.5
diskette)

A combination key function is a good idea (turn standby on and off). Could be

I don't think you want to use Tandy's version of anything on an IBM. The first
thing you want to do is use FDISK and create a partition if none exists. Then
you you want to FORMAT C:/S dOS should automatically mark the bad sectors. It

RE: Forum message board-question (Re: Msg 12595)

  Sheldon,

  I know a Sheldon Shafer in Louisville . . .

. . . so I was surprised to see your name here. I believe he spells his last
name with one F, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, the Sheldon I know is a
newspaper reporter for The Courier-Journal. Where are you from? I mean, how
many Sheldon Shaffer's are there in this world?

Regarding your not being able to find a message addressed to you, if you had
just just hit <enter> after replying to that first message, you would have
seen the next message. You see, the default command on first entering Forum is
READ WAITING. That is, just by hitting <enter> any new messages addressed to
you will be shown, one by one. You did not need to select any "read menu" and
I am not really sure what you mean by that.

Now, while I have written a long HELP file that can be read by typing HELP at
the TANDY PC> prompt, (it is HELP message 11 at the moment), just remember
that DIR TO COUNSEL will show a list of all messages in Forum that are
addressed to you. Then, just type in the message number only to see the
message (no need to type READ). If you want to read message 11670, then at the
FORUM> prompt, type 11670 <enter> and it will be shown.

Similarly, a READ TO COUNSEL will show, one by one, all messages addressed to
you. READ TO COUNSEL NEW (or just READ WAITING) will show you only those you
have not already seen (this is what Forum defaults to when you enter).

Now, all of the above is on the assumption that you are not familiar with the
commands in Forum (most people know only a fraction of them). If, indeed, you
do know your way around Forum, then the problem would most likely be that you
have "de-selected" some Forum topics. That is, when you first join the SIG,
your "settings profile" is set to read all messages under all topics, but some
people choose to use the CLEAR command to read only certain topics and have
  other topics "invisible."

For instance, some people use the CLEAR command to "de-select" those topics
that have no interest to them. Let's say you could care less about pocket
computers or Orchestra-90, well, then you "turn off" those topics so that you
never see any messages in those topics. You miss a lot that way, because so
many people pay little attention to the Topic they place a message under.
Plus, if someone addresses a message to you and places it in a topic you have
"turned off" then you cannot see it, even though it is addressed to you.

Since this could cause headaches, you SHOULD get a reminder each time you
enter Forum of any topics "CLEARed." It says something like:

"You have selected all topics except "Pocket Computers" and "General
      Information" and "Orchestra-90."

So, you should be reminded of any CLEARed topics, but sometimes we ignore
those first few sentences shown when we enter Forum.

To make sure you have all topics set so you can "see" them, try the SHOW SET
command to see what topics are selected. Or, at the FORUM> prompt, just type
SET * to select all topics (yes, CLEAR * would turn off all topics).

If none of this helps, well, maybe it will help someone. <grin>

  Andrew,

  I am not sure I can help you . . .

  . . . except to assure you that Deskmate works fine on a 2000. I use a 2000
all the time and when I am not downloading or uploading I often use Deskmate
II. IS your Deskmate written expressly for the 2000? There are several
versions of Deskmate and Personal Deskmate.

Yes, I use the Telcom program. I suppose you have set the proper parameters
for your setup at the Telcom-Status menu. If not, first use arrows keys to
select Telcom and DO NOT select an autolog; just hit right arrow key three
times and press <enter> and then make sure you have right parameters set up.
Select whatever baud rate your modem is capable of, then try 8-bit,1 stop bit,
  no parity, for starters.

I suppose you know all that since you made it here in some fashion, but
   --- just in case.

By the way, there are two very nice terminal programs for the Tandy 2000 here
in our database (the PC Compatibles database, that is). I recommend both
COMM2000, (also known as MTERM2K) and GTPowerComm (the 2000 version is in the
  "Tandy Specific" database).

I find Deskmate's Telcom to be very handy, though the "power users" on here
find it a bit unsophisticated. Myself, I like being able to quickly bounce out
and use Text and Filer and Calendar from Deskmate menu and then come right
back on without ever leaving Delphi.

If you had some more specific questions, perhaps someone could be of more
assistance to you. If you are still having problems, let us know where you
got the cable, what brand and model of modem you are using, etc.

depress the +/- keys I get the correct scan codes that emulate an AT-type

It is rather a pain to do it this way, but then the little LT won't allow us a

lets F11 and F12 act as the numeric +/- keys. You might want to try it (a small

RE: 3.5" drive for T1000 (Re: Msg 12620)
     From: MISAL To: SQUASH

The last drive on your system (in your case drive B:) must have what is known as
a terminating resistor. The first drive (drive A:) must have this terminating
resistor removed.

Your 3.5 drive has jupers that are marked 0,1,2,3, as does your 5.25 drive.
These tell the system which drive you prefer that particular drive to function
as. Take a look at these jumpers. It sounds like you have 0 jumpered on both
drives. In order to tell the system which drive it is, you must have these
jumpers in the right place.

0 = A: drive
1 = B: drive
2 = C: drive
3 = D: drive

You can make the 3.5 the A: drive by removing the terminating resistor and
jumpering the pins marked 0. If your 5.25 drive had the terminating resistor
removed, it must be replaced, as this will now be the B: drive. The
terminating resistor always is installed in the last drive on your system, in
your case B: drive. In order for the 5.25 B: drive to be recognized, it must
have the pins marked 1 jumpered.

OK as a last resort try renaming master.fnt to master.sav. Now copy extra.fnt
to master.fnt. Only do this on a backup disk. See if this helps. I think the
error you are getting is because the master.fnt file is 3300+ bytes over it's

Did Kevin forward the message I left to him (for you) about renaming the
MASTER.FNT file on the boot diskette? Your error sounds like the FNT file is an
EGA load. There are several other FNT files on the diskette. Choose one of these
and rename it (on a back-up diskette, of course) to MASTER.FNT.

Try to boot, if the same thing happens, choose another one of the FNT files and
rename it to MASTER.FNT. Once you are able to boot First Pub. you can then make
your own FNT file with the ADD FONT FILES TO MENU.

Sorry for the delay -- I've been in sunny CA!

Turbo Pascal V 4.0 works fine in the command line mode on the T2K with obvious
exceptions of the graphics library and the CRT module. The DOS access works
fine and there is an easy patch to the EXE files to make them work on the T2K
using the CRT module. If I have some time now, I'll be able to finish the
Borland port of CRT to the T2K.

Turbo C is also a Wizz on the T2K. I really like both. My articles in DosBoot
are written in either TP3 or TP4 (of late) and developed on the Tandy 2000 with
momentary lapses to the Tandy 1000HD to check out the IBM compatible features.
My MENU Version 4.0 available in the PC Compatibles Data Base is written mostly
in Turbo C Version 1.5 although I can also compile it under Microsoft C Version
5 (which also runs on the 2000) and check it out with CodeView.

CodeView: it's great!! Also, runs on the 2000 in the stream mode (like DEBUG)
-- you can also use SYMDEB for both Turbo C and Turbo Pascal Version 4.

So Microsoft Codeview runs on the T2K--I am surprised. I just got a chance to
get an update of Power C from Mix C that has Codeview like features on it and I
don't think it works on the T2K machine. I am considering, for the money,
getting that right now. I also can get Turbo Pascal 4.0 at a discounter around
here for $57.00 so I might consider that. The problem I had with Mix C was C
language "incompatibility" that is either Lattice Microsoft or some other C
language had generated the source coude I wanted to play with and my Mix C
compiler didn't like it. The new Mix C is called a "superset" of Microsoft C
with ANSI compatibility but I didn't know that ANSI even looked over the C
language like Fortran 66 and 77 and other languages. DO you you is there a ANSI
standard C that might include all those screwball functions that other C
compilers such as Lattice have?

Microsoft C Version 5.1, Turbo C 1.5, Lattice C Version 3.3, and Aztec C from
Manx all implement a very good and extremely close representation of the current
version of the ANSI standard. The most recent compiler release from Microsoft
and Borland are particularly good with a wealth of added functions for machine
access to the BIOS level, graphics, UNIX compatibility, etc.

I have not liked MIX's variation of C since I knew them as ALCOR for the TRS-80
Model-I/III/4 computers. You can get Turbo C for about the same price as MIX
and it is a far better compiler and ranks almost with Microsoft C for speed of
execution and tight code generation.

Mike, it already does (sort of). It has been a while since I did it, but if you
will get a directory of your PFIII data disk, the largest file contains the
actual record information. Sorry, but I can't remember which file that is. I
have converted several PFIII databases to MSDOS by taking this file and
transfering it to an MSDOS machine, then writing a BASIC program that uses
random access files to break it apart. Use the same lengths for varibles in the
field statement that you used when defining the file in PFIII and read the file
in and then print it back out using sequential files. You can then easily
convert this (import it) into your MSDOS data base. You might even be able to
skip the BASIC program if your MSDOS data base has a powerful enough conversion
utility. Not a very clear or complete explanation of how to do it, but maybe it
will get you started.

certainly don't! It wouldn't let me delete it and it wouldn't let me edit i{.
I'm getting to much trash on the line I suppose. Thanks for the advice I'll
give it a try. Yes, I'm very interested in AdvBas 4.0, where can I get it?

DREW, what comm program are you using. I found I could not get Windows Terminal
to work with my T2K, but GTOF1300 works fine...so does Com2000. I thought my
modem-computer combination was bad until I got the right software. good luck..jp

I have the same problem as BOORMAN and the pauses won't help in as much as I do
it manually, not with a cmd file.

No, just pressing the ENTER key anywhere from two to 20 times before Telenet
responds. As BOORMAN said, it works fine (2 CR's) on 1200 BAUD. It keeps me
from using a script on 2400 BAUD because you never know how many times you're
gonna have to hit ENTER before Telenet responds. I don't get it!!

At 2400 baud on telenet, you have to press @ <CR> <CR> at least from this line
in New Orleans Glen

I've tried several well three anyway. Deskmate, MITEMS, and gtpowercom. None
of them worked. I sent it back to the shop about a week ago and they haven't
finished with it yet, so now I know something is really wrong with it. Thanks
for the suggestion.

O.K., thanks. I'll try that. RLYOUNG left me some mail giving me a script to
follow showing the "@", but only one C/R, so it didn't work. Let ya know what
happens.

manually but not in the script. I'll work on it though. And thanks for your
help!

I am looking for a memory upgrade board for a Tandy 2000, to get from 256K to
512K (or even 384K, for that matter). Tandy has them backordered until
September! If anyone knows of a course, or has one they're willing to sell, call
me at 800/424-6722, ask for Dwight.

Sure you can install the SmartWatch from Tandy. I did it. The spare room between
the disk drive and the chip is approximately 1/16". The easiest way to install
the chip is to cut the metallized plastic sheet covering the main printed
circuit (the only one in fact!!!). Cut a small ,square hole close to the disk
drive corner, you should feel the presence of a chip with your fingers below the
plastic sheet at that place. This is simpler than having to remove the main
printed circuit board from the plastic sheet. Unfortunatly, you still have to
remove the disk drive but it is quite easy.
