What exactly are you looking for? If it is hard disk security try the PD
program in the utilities database, PCLOK1.1 It works really good with one
exception, a 32Meg limit. If your drive is 32 Meg or less and you only have one
DOS partition, get this program. If you try to boot from a floppie the hard
disk is not available to the system. If you boot from the hard disk you get a
message asking for the password BEFORE Command.com is LOADED, thus you cannot
bypass this protection. If you are looking into having different people access
only specific parts of the hard disk, check out Hands Off the Program. I will
get you the address if this is what you want.

I currently have a Tandy 1000A with a 32 MEG Card installed along with the two
Floppy drives and an External expansion box that has 4 drive bays and 7 slots (
one of which has the 32 Meg Card installed). My questions is I would like to add
another HD as I can get a 64 MEG drive for a real good price, but it has to be
partitioned into two 32 Meg drives to workd. Can I keep the Hard Card installed
so I will have a total of 96 Megs onboard?
Pleas let me know if any of you know what needs to be done, as the Operators
Manual for the Tandy 1000A says it can support 2 HD, but the way it need to be
set up it will come to a total of 3 HD's.

P.S. The reason I want all the storage space is for the BBS I'm running as 32
Megs is beggining to fill up and I don't want to have to take a lot of files
offline.

     3rd party hard drives
     From: DAVEMILLER To: ALL

I've been looking into adding a hard card to my 1000TX lately, and have come
across a couple of questions. I know that the original Tandy 1000's were not
able to use PC/comp. hard drives (cards) unless they were specifically designed
to be Tandy compatible. However, I do remember reading something a few months
ago, either in PCM or in the now-defunct 80-Micro, that said Tandy had remedied
a few of the hardware incompatibilities, and that some, if not all 3rd-party
hard drives would work with the new series of computers, including the TX. I'd
like to be able to use a 3rd-party card, especially considering they run nearly
$100 cheaper than Tandy compatible cards from the same manufacturer. But, I
also want to be sure it will work first. Does anyone have any experience in
this area?

I'm currently using a 1000 TX, although I'm trying to make a deal whereby I can
sell it to a BBS sysop and upgrade to a TL at little cost. And, yes, I'm
interested in hard drive prices. If I keep the TX, it would have to be a hard
card or an external drive, I need to keep both floppies. On the TL, however, I
could use either, since it has a 5 1/4" slot that I wouldn't need. Also, I need
at least 30 meg, maybe more if the price is right. Thanks.

Your computer looks at the physical devices. This means that it cares not how
you partition a hard drive, as long as you do not exceed the amount of "drive

If I understand this correctly, you have 186K of data files on a 360K diskette
and when you add the actual runtime programs to this diskette, they will not all
fit. This tells me that your compiled programs are in excess of 174K.

The other assumption that I arrive at is that you only have one disk drive. How
much memory is present on your system. If you have enough, you can use a
RAMdisk. The real problem seems to be the lack of a second drive, correct?

in color on my Tandy 1000 but in black & white on a plain old CGA.

Does anyone know whether Microsoft will offer support in QuickBASIC for

we get Tandy to pressure Microsoft to offer SCREEN 5 or SCREEN 6 (which wouldn't
conflict with the current SCREEN statement parameters anyway)?

According to page 85 of the Tandy MS-DOS 3.3 reference manual, the correct
syntax for FORMAT is:

FORMAT [/1][/4][/8][/n:xx][/t:yy][/v][/s]

where "n" references the number of sectors per track and "t" is the number of
tracks on the disk.

I ASS-u-med that you were running the most current DOS version and I do not and
cannot speak for the earlier, buggier versions. Your reference to DRIVPARM is a
key that you are using an earlier version because this does not exist in 3.3.
Aforementioned command works well on most machines I have tried it on under 3.3.

Some drives and DOS 4.4 are fanatical about formatting the right disk in the
right density. For example, my 4000 will not format a regular 3.5" disk in
1.44MB format without drilling an extra hole in the left side of the disk (
looking at the top). It also will not read a HD disk (one that does have the
hole in the top) if it has been formatted in 720KB format.

course, sometimes an IBM is not an IBM. Oh well. It seems to be compatible
with Epson FX-80 except for a few escape codes sent at the beginning of
printing. If I want to I can print to a file and then delete the first escape
codes. Or else just put up with the letter "B" which appears on each page.

One footnote: I must power down the printer between pages. One of the escape
codes causes something terrible to happen if the printer has had it sent to it
once before.

Yes, the increase in size after compiling is normal. QB4 (all QB versions) adds
library type files to the code, such things as CLS, LOCATE, etc. must be
interpreted. In BASIC, they are actually small program modules, invoked by the
CALL label. For instance, CLS uses an assembly routine to clear the screen.

The code size after compile is one of the few things I dislike about QB4.

Maybe my problem is that I'm using the generic version of DOS 3.30. I have no
doubt that this is 3.30 ("ver" command confirms it). The DRIVPARM command does
exist in my version. This is confirmed on p. 260 in the config.sys command
section. It states Command: drivparm Purpose: defines parameters for
block devices. When I run it, it does not give an unrecognized command (which
of course happens when "junk" is put in config.sys). I wished I knew a 3000HL
owner who had in fact had success with driver.sys. The thread on CIS IBMHW
consists of clone owners stating that drivparm and driver.sys did not work for
them because despite loading either or both drivers, the ROM BIOS "insisted" on
formating any 80 track disc as a 1.2 meg disk. I would expect the driver to
override this, but that has not been my experience not the experience as
expressed by many clone owners on CIS. I will re-try your suggestion. In the
meantime I have decided to take the path of least resistence and have ordered a
BIOS update. I hope the new BIOS has an expanded hard disk selection because my
Seagate 251-1 requires that a RAM resident driver be loaded. Not only does this
waste my RAM, but it was a major pain in the butt to find out that this driver
was needed. Tandy tech support had no answer for that problem (I have NEVER
found a tech support that can under- stand my problem more less answer it; I'm
sure you've had that problem also). The dealer also had no answer. Only after
getting on CIS & Delphi, could I find competent people who knew my hard disc
problem could be simply solved by a new table in RAM. (I'm getting off "track").
Thanks for your help. John

     RE: DMP130 (Re: Msg 13307)

I have finally resolved the problem with using Windows 2.1 and the Tandy
DMP-130 printer. Because there is no driver for the Tandy printer itself, you
have to use it in "IBM Mode."

To configure the printer, turn it around and look at the DIP switches in
the back (behind the little plastic cover). Here is how I set up my switches
and everything works perfectly:

                     2 1
                    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
              On | | | |x|x| | | | |x| |
              Off |x|x| | | |x|x|x|x| |x|
                    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The next step is to install the correct printer driver. First, install the
driver itself. If you want to set up Windows from scratch, run SETUP.EXE and
choose "IBM Proprinters." If you want to install it from within Windows, run
the CONTROL.EXE program, and select "Installation" and "Add new printer." Then
select "IBM Proprinters" to be copied from the installation diskettes.

Second, you have to properly configure the printer from within Windows
itself. Run the CONTROL.EXE program and select "Setup". You need to connect the
printer to the correct port and then make it the default printer. To do this,
choose "Setup" and "Connections" and match IBM Proprinters to LPT1: (or
whichever port you are using) and press Enter. Then select "Setup" and
"Printer". Move the highlight to "IBM Proprinters" and press Enter. You will be
shown the IBM Proprinter driver screen. Select "Proprinter", not "II" or "XL".
You can choose two graphics densities (the more dense choice takes longer), and
various other options. Press Enter when complete.

Now Windows is set up to print on your DMP130 as the default printer, with
output to the port you selected from the Control Panel. Of course, dot matrix
takes forever and looks worse than laser, but at under $350 you can't beat the
DMP130. I never knew it could print what Windows can print on it.

     Hard cards
     From: CHUCKY To: ALL

 Hi,
I recently bought a 32mb hard card from "Shamrock". It is a Seagate
manufactured unit, supposedly for the Tandy 1000 TX, which I own. I had a lot of
trouble installing the card because it just didn't want to fit.
The board seemed just a little too long so it pressed on the jacks for
joysticks and phone plug. I finally got it in the slot closest to the power
supply, but the attatching screws did not line up right so the card was not very
stable in it's slot. I decided to try it anyway and it worked.
The installation instructions said to flip the #2 switch on the video interupt
switch box. After doing so, I noticed that some game programs (especially
GUNSHIP) won't run in the Tandy mode, and run poorly in the CGA mode.
I then reversed the switch and GUNSHIP ran perfectly. I returned the switch to
the Seagate specifications and reinstalled the card. This time I could not get
it to work. As I wiggled the board with the computer on, I could hear the card
turning on and off. It was just not making good contact because of the fitting
problem. I have decided to contact "Shamrock" on Monday 11/14 to see about a
refund.
  My questions are:

       1) Has anyone had good luck with any brand of hard card other than a
Tandy ? (I would like to stick with 30 or 40 mb).
       2) Do all hard cards require the #2 video interupt switch to be flipped?
       3) If I must go with Tandy, are there some realistic prices around ?
$800.00 for a 20mb card is nuts! The seagate was only $409.00.
       4) If the #2 vidio interupt switch is flipped, is there anyway to make
GUNSHIP work ? It is the Tandy version, and it can be card disk
          installed.

                          Thanks for helping,
                             >Chucky (Steve)

When you upgraded, did you delete all of the old Telix files and start brand
new? Sometimes, mixing the old with the new causes problems; especially with the
config files. If you didn't delete all the old files, try that. How much memory
do you have?

It sounds as if you may have to tape pin 14 on your printer cable, in order to
stop the linefeeds.

This is only after you have tried all other ways. It will not hurt anything, but
Print Shop is a strange program and you should play with it before believing
that "it will not print correctly". An example - I had to turn the printer off
and back on to get it to work correctly with my Oki 192+. Seems the printer was
holding the last configuration and not switching to the new ones I was trying.
Once I did it correctly - the problems disappeared.

Telix uses a few key files for the terminal control. These are VT102, VT52 ect.
It's possible one of them are corrupt. I would delete the Telix.cnf file and
start all over. It's also possible that the default modem init string has to be

Your printer codes can take care of the linefeeds, if you use the dBASE STORE
command. I don't know what your printer codes are, so I will give you

linefeed toggle works the same.

STORE CHR(27) + CHR(15) TO COMPRESSEDON

Thanks Mike I'll give it a try. How about form feeds? I don't recall seeing an
escape code in my manual for that - and even if it is there how would I use it
since its the report form generater thats keeping track of the number of lines

Using the NOEJECT option will cancel the form feed that occurs when the TO PRINT
option is used, J.J.

The IBM decimal code for a form feed is 12 [CHR$(12)], line feed is 10. Look
through your manual - you will see that they are probably the same.

You must tell DOS that the 720K drive is present. Place a line in your
CONFIG.SYS file, like this:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /d:1 /f:2

The "/d:1" is telling DOS that the 720K is the B: drive, "/d:0" means it would
be A: drive.

The "/f:2" tells DOS to expect a 720K drive, a "/f:7" would be a 1.44M drive.

Be sure the DOS file DRIVER.SYS is in your boot path.

The switch /d: followed by a numeric indicator should take care of your problem.
Keep in mind the computer numerics use a zero (0) as the first of a number
accumulation, so - 0 = A: drive, 1 = B: drive, 2 = C: drive and 3 = D: drive.

The /f: switch use 0 = 160K to 360K drive type, 1 = 1.2MB, 2 = 720K, and 7 =
1.44.

Your CONFIG.SYS for a 720K drive as B: drive would look like this:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /d:1 /f:2  (a /d:3 would indicate D: drive)

From the Tandy FORUM (where you are now), type EXit at the forum prompt to
return you to the Tandy prompt. Next, type 'PC Compatibles' and press return to
enter the gateway between the two PCM sponsored forums. At the PC Compatibles,
main menu you can access the DAtabase area and look at the selections -- one of
which is the PCM ($) area and contains 'PCM On Disk' for the more recent issues.
Downloading these issue files will add a $12.00 surcharge to your DELPHI bill
for the entire PCM On Disk for the issue selected.

You may also reach PCM writers and magazine editors in both forums. While we
favor the PC Compatibles forum, many of us also visit the Tandy forum on a
frequent basis.

Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy using DELPHI and continue to read PCM.

From the Tandy SIG Main Menu, type EX PC. This takes you to the PC-Compatibles
SIG (Tandy's sister SIG). At the PC-Compatibles SIG Main Menu, type DA (for
databases). Next type PCM. Now type DIR (to get a listing of the programs). When
you spot one that you are interested in type READ {listing name}.

This works the same for all Topics of the database.

DRIVER.SYS will always define a new logical drive. The /D specification tells
the software which physical drive to use and not which logical drive. I think
Mike is thinking of the DRIVPARM statement, which is not supported by IBM
versions of DOS. DRIVPARM lets you change the device parameters for the A or B
logical drive.

I uploaded a utility a month or so ago which duplicates the DRIVPARM function
for IBM PC-DOS users. I believe that I called it SETBP35. It should be in the
database over in the PC Compatibles SIG. If you have the IBM version of DOS,
use the SETBP35 utility. If you have a version of MS-DOS which supports
DRIVPARM in CONFIG.SYS, use that instead. If you have a system with CMOS, you
shouldn't need anything since the SETUP configuration program should support the
720K drive correctly.

     286 Express Card
     From: RWHOFFMAN To: ALL

I have run into a timing problem with the PC Technologies 286 Express Card and
the 80287 math co-processor. Heavy floating-point number computations can
result in the machine locking up requiring a power-on reset (C-A-D will restart
but the machine will hang during POST). If the cache is disabled, the problem
disappears (but so does the performance). Changing the instruction sequence or
adding a delay loop will also cause the problem to disappear.

I am using a 1000SX with the IBM C/2 compiler and run-time libraries. It is
possible that the problem is in the C/2 library routines, but I don't have
source for them, so I can't tell (also, when the machine hangs, nothing works so
I can't debug anything).

I changed the program enough to make the hang disappear, and I'm just hoping
that it doesn't show up again, since running with either the cache disabled or
the 80287 disabled is not a desirable solution. I thought I would append this
just in case anybody else runs into the problem.

     From: DOUGFOGG To: KENTSMITH

I'm sure John won't mind if I jump in with a quick answer, Kent. Yes, you
can copy COMMAND.COM over on to a VDISK. Then just issue the DOS command SET
COMSPEC=E:\COMMAND.COM (assuming your VDISK is set up as drive E:). Now your
boot drive need no longer have COMMAND.COM on it and many operations which
require reloading COMMAND.COM will be much snappier. You may occasionally run
into a program which pays no attention to the COMSPEC parameter and asks you to
"Place COMMAND.COM disk in drive A:" when it finishes running, but that
shouldn't happen often.
I've never seen a completely accurate table of system information for the
Tandy 2000 such as Bob Jack's listing for the 1000. Addresses can and do vary
with BIOS versions, which is one reason a well-behaved program won't help itself
to the information by reading these memory areas directly. A good DOS would
provide functions to supply this information to programs quickly; and let's face
it, MS-DOS isn't the world's greatest. So sometimes, peeking in the BIOS
communications area for information is the only way to get the job done.
For Tandy 2000 DOS version 2.11.03 (BIOS Version 2.02), the following may
be of use:

0000:1CBF byte Foreground Normal Text Video Color (0-15d)
0000:1CB9 byte Background Normal Text Video Color (0-15d)
0000:1CCB byte Hilit Text Foreground Video Color (0-15d)
0000:1CC5 byte Hilit Text Background Video Color (0-15d)

0000:0474 word Segment Address of text video memory

          0000:04C3 byte Hours
          0000:04C2 byte Minutes
          0000:04C5 byte Seconds
          0000:04C4 byte Hundredths
