     286 Express Card
     From: RWHOFFMAN To: ALL

Just wanted to say that I have successfully installed the 286 Express Card on my
1000SX. I had no problems with the installation and rough calculations indicate
approximately a 3x performance improvement. However, I found out that I now need
to buy an 80287. While my 8087 is still supported, it can only be used when the
8088 is selected. If you want to use a math co-processor when the 80286 is
selected, you must install an 80287. This is probably obvious to others but I
didn't catch it when I was ordering the hardware.

     From: BEEMERBOB To: ALL

I'm helping at a local Community College as a sort of PFS WRITE expert and a
Tandy SX/ general DOS expert. (The teachers know their English course but squat
about computers). The problem is : When the switches 1,2,3 are ON and the rest
are off, I can print WRITE'S box characters. When SW 2 and 7 are on and the
rest off, I can print WRITE's underline characters. In the IBM mode -first set
of sw positions- the underline chars shift the DMP130 to Condensed type and
"lock" the printer in that position until it's turned off and then turned back
on. Printing the "box" chars in the Tandy mode - sw 2 and 7 ON - the "box"
characters come out as a + and a - char on top of each other. Anyone have a
like experience? And maybe a solution?

There is a program in the Tandy Specific Topic of the Database that may help you
"construct" a printer control program for you DMP 106. It will offer the
guidelines needed. I am not aware of any "already" programmed application for
the 106. Look for this:

Name: 130 PRINTER SETUP FOR IBM MODE
Type: PROGRAM
Date: 25-JUN-1988 02:48 by ALICATE

TAN130PR.EXE, By Rob Forrest

This is a printer setup program for the Tandy DMP 130, while used in the IBM
mode. It offers a menu to select from. Includes condensed, page break, etc. A
Menu to permit setting Printer Codes for the Tandy DMP-130 in IBM mode.

Yes, you can use a mono monitor (not TTL) on a Coco I, II and III. It involves
a small electronic driver. A very simply device, comprised of two transistors
and a few other parts. The tricky part is that you must find the correct video
output and power connections "inside" the Coco for the driver.

If you are electronically inclined, I can give you the circuit design and the
connection points.

Weeeelllll, that's not quite true -- he could poke the keystrokes he needs into
the keyboard buffer and then exit BASIC using the SYSTEM command. If done
correctly, the keyboard buffer will believe that someone has been industriously

Theoretically -- I'm not going to try it -- this should work and it certainly

     Tandy PLUS modem
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

My aunt has a Tandy plus modem . . .

. . . in her 1000TX and it is apparently on the blink. What happens is that
you do not hear a dial tone even though it does echo sound of dialing. And, if
you pick up the extension it is on, there is no dial tone until the extension
itself triggers it a moment or so later.

So, when she tries to dial out with an autolog, or manually, you hear the
dialing, but it finally just times out, having never gotten a line.

I took it to the shack and they plopped it into an EX in the showroom and got
same result I did. So, they suggested I pitch it!

Geez! It cost $199.95 originally for this 1200 plus modem. But, they said my
aunt could buy same one now for $99 and that would be cheaper than having
  repair center fix it.

Anybody know what might be wrong? If it is a matter of swapping out a relay or
something simple, I'll try that before I just chuck it.

Given that she seldom uses a modem, if she does have to get another, I think
I'll tell her to get the (presently) $50 300 baud internal, but it does seem
like that thing could be fixed rather than tossed.

                                      -- Jim

From what you have said, it appears that the modem's dialing circuit is ok. The
trigger that grabs the phone line seems to be the problem. This could be in any
number of components, and would require voltage measurements while the modem is
functioning (or trying to). In order to do this, you would need the modem's
schematic.

I know that it seems a great waste, but the advice given you to scrap the modem
was well founded.

QB4 requires 320K of memory, DOS 3.3 requires about 80K. As you can see, if your
program is under 200K (allowing for buffer space) and you have a 640K machine,
and you have no interferring TSR's - then, yes, you should be able to run QB4

matter anyone else going to provide hard drive support for the EX/HX

No John. Tandy doesn't sell diagnostics disks like everybody else. I went to
Tandy to get one for my SX after running IBM's at school and, they looked at me
like I was crazy. (Well, I might be a little buggy at times). I asked if there
was one available for technicians and again a B_I_G N_O!!

     3000HL BIOS/Driver.sys
     From: MAXSMART To: ALL

I am going to upgrade to a 3.5" 1.44 meg for my 3000HL. As it is an early 3000
(BIOS 1.00) there is no 3.5" support. Tandy dealers tell me that I need a BIOS
upgrade at $45. However, I have heard on good source that by using my DOS
3.30's driver.sys (with the appropriate parameters) that I don't need the new
BIOS. This makes sense (cents & Big Bucks!) as I have a non- standard hard disc
that load a device driver (into RAM). By analogy, it seems to me that the
driver.sys file would probably provide the necessary device driver info for my
system (and hence save me $45 and the hassle of popping out a BIOS IC chip).
Any comment or experience on this subject is appreciated and if you have a good
(or bad) experience install a 3.5" into a 3000HL, lay it on me. I am interested
in non-Tandy 3.5" discs that may work (such as a Toshiba or Teac). Thanks in
advance, John

Accually, I beleive it's 256x1 150ns that they use. You can use 120ns chips but,
if you want to be uniform, 150ns it is. The EX has an 8 bit data bus but each
256k chip is only kicking off 1 bit. Each bank is 9 chips; 1 bit from each chip
to make the 8 and the 9th being the parity checking chip..

Supports 10, 20 and 35 meg external hard drives. R.S cost is $229.00 ( I suggest

Yes, 640K would allow you to use your Menu program and QB4. 512K may be a little
too tight. Now, I have some NEWS for you:

Got your diskette today, Gary. You used a different approach to a MENU type
program - I like that. In fact, I very much like the program. Also, I now
understand your SHELL problem - you will soon see is not a problem at all!

First, line 50 in the PUT-1 program is incorrect. I know that you did not
program this, but it should read:

50 CLEAR ,32786,2000:SCREEN 0:KEY OFF

In the current form (CLEAR ,,32768), the system reads it as clearing 32768 bytes
of "stack space"!

Now, to your SHELL/DIRECTORY problem. The BASIC commands ENVIRON and ENVIRON$
will allow you to change the DIRECTORY or read (and hold it in a variable) it.

When in BASIC, type: PRINT ENVIRON$("PATH"). This will show you the current
default (at boot) directory. With regard to your program, you should hold the
"default" directory in a variable so you can reset it if neccessary. To do this,
you would use:

A$=ENVIRON$("PATH") (A$ now equals the default directory)

To change a directory, in BASIC, your would use:

ENVIRON"PATH=A:\ANY\ONE" (ONE is a sub of ANY. You could use just ANY, also).

With these two commands, it should now become clear how you would be able to
change directories, hold directories in a variable and "set them" before you
SHELL. I suggest you set ENVIRON to your MENU directory, so that it will always
"return" there.

Let me know how this works out.

I believe that you may find that the DRIVER.SYS will not work with versions of
DOS below 3.2, John. Of course I will not swear to this, as I have not tested
it. I do remember that their is a difference in the table allocation parameters
and this is why I think it may not work. I realize that the interrupts are the
same, that is why I won't "swear" that it will not work.

With the correct DOS version, DRIVER.SYS will work just fine to allow a 1.44 on
your 3000HL.

On the older T1000's there were two jumpers next to the coprocessor socket. They
were screened E8 and E9. These had to be removed in order to allow the
coprocessor to operate. The TX may be the same. Take a look and see if there are
jumpers next to the socket and remove them. You won't hurt anything by doing so.

This is a Tandy 1000TX, using an 80286 CPU. I was confused on this, at first,
also. The member was trying to use an 8087, where he needs an 80287.

AST's multi-function card is supposed to be a standard AT compatible add-on.
This being the case, the TX will support it or any other standard AT bus
hardware add-on.

     From: MAXSMART To: BEACHBUM

I put my clone 1.44 meg in a 3000HL with BIOS 1.0. In my config.sys I have the
driver.sys with the following: /d:1 /c /f:7 /h:2 /s:18 /t:80. I have DOS 3.30
but when I give a command of "format /t:80 /n:18" for the high density disks, I
get "parameters not supported". This is despite the fact that the DOS manual
list those switches. I have reset by CMOS RAM to 1.44 meg in drive B:. My
3000HL's BIOS does not support 1.44 but driver.sys was suppose to. What are
your thoughts? I wonder if the new BIOS chip would cure this problem? The disk
reads fine (of disks with stuff on them). It will format to 1.2 meg OK, it just
won't go to 1.44. What do you think? Thanks, John

From: TACAN To: ALL MODEL4 (NR)

Are there any DOTWRITER users left these days....? While driving my old Model4
around I found a new trick that even ProSoft claims the program can't do.
If you are trying to write a true "form letter" by inserting text in the
middle of lines, use the .PP (paragraph) instead of .KE or .RD.
Ensure the formatting is ON, and you have to do a negative skip to find the
right place. BUT, the following text will pick right up again and look pretty
good. If you have abandoned your DotWriter fonts, I'm looking for 7-bit
versions.

When you boot the system, are you using the drive letter displayed when
DRIVER.SYS loads in the FORMAT command. For example, my machine installs the
DRIVER.SYS as drive G: so the format would be FORMAT G:/n:18/t:80/h:2 and that
should work.

The only ones that I have seen support 2M or less. Anything over that is lili
limited to the AT bus. If I see anything I will let you know.
