4.2 High-level Format of CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Card

CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards are mostly factory pre-formatted. There is
no need to perform this operation, if your CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards
have already been formatted.

Refer to the followings to perform formatting:

I. Format the card in DOS

* Format by Parallel Power Reader (Issue FORMAT command in DOS)

This is the most preferable method of formatting because it is a standard
format operation in DOS. FORMAT command can only be executed after Image
Card Reader has been connected to computer properly.

* Enable INT 13 commands by adding /B parameter to the device driver EPATHD
  in DOS

INT13 allows FDISK and FORMAT commands in DOS to be executed on Parallel Power
Reader after connecting to computer properly.

The command line in CONFIG.SYS to activate INT 13 for Parallel Power Reader:

 DEVICE = EPATHD.SYS /B /FLASH
 DEVICE = ASPIHDRM.SYS /S

 or

Issue the following dynamic loading command at DOS command prompt

 >LOAD

After Parallel Power Reader has been connected to computer, issue "FORMAT X:"

be taken on this issue by users. However, it can be done by users on Image
Card Reader through parallel port in DOS. Please see section 4.1 for the
procedure and go through the following steps to perform the partition. Note:
To do partition, you shall enable INT 13 in DOS first.

a. Issue "FDISK" at DOS command prompt, enter "5" to change disk drive
selection to the drive with alphabet assigned to Parallel Power Reader by the
   system.
b. Build up new partition by typing "1" or "2" (refer to the instruction
display on screen to proceed it).
c. After completing the partition, reboot the computer and proceed disk
   formatting.
Note: The CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Card would need to proceed a
high-level format after completing the partition.

Special Note: ATAINIT.EXE program from Systemsoft may create an
incompatible format for CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards to be used with
Parallel Power Reader. Please do not use ATAINIT in DOS to partition the
CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards from PCMCIA slot directly. Use section
4.2 & 4.3 for the partition or format of the CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC
   Cards instead.

Hot Swapping
============

Hot Swapping (the capability of removing and inserting different
CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards without turning off host computer) is
available in DOS, Windows, Windows 95/98 and Windows NT. The removal and
insertion of different CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Cards will be detected by
computer automatically after device drivers have been installed to the
computer. When a new CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Card has been inserted into
Parallel Power Reader, the LED light will go off and then back on again. This
indicates, the CompactFlash/SmartMedia/PC Card is recognized by the host
computer.

General Note

   resolve this problem.
d. If your LPT1 port is working fine at Device Manger. Then try to

Q: I install the Parallel Power Reader and attach my old dot matrix printer to
the "printer" pass-through connector. However, when I reboot the system,
the system won t start up. What should I do?

A: Some old dot matrix printers probably have the slow data transfer rate.
It might not be fully compatible with our Parallel Power Reader. To resolve
the problems that cause the system hanging up, try to remove the printer
temporarily from the printer pass-through connector or use an A-B
switch device to solve this problem.

Q: No problems in working when you first install the software but once you
try to restart the system you can't.

A: For some PCs, power must be turned on prior to plugging keyboard cable
power jack into power socket on the printer pass-through connector. If
this is not a power problem, please try to re-install the software.

Q: After software driver was installed on Windows NT 4.0, Parallel Power Reader
was not recognized and NT indicated one or more services did not start
and Event Viewer was used to see what services.

A: If you have SCSI cards installed in your computer, SCSI cards probably
conflict with Parallel Power Reader. Please try to remove SCSI cards
physically and restart the computer. Restore SCSI cards after Parallel Power
   Reader is recognized.
